He gave me my first kiss. I never expected he might be my last.
Lawson
Ever since Oakley Beaumont skipped town, it feels as if my life has gone off the rails. Even worse than my divorce and moving back into my childhood bedroom at the Darling Ranch is the fact that I’m learning there’s a whole lot about myself I simply don’t know.
Like whether or not I’m straight.
And why the sudden absence of my best friend left a hole in my chest I haven’t been able to fill in the three years he’s been gone.
First things first: I need to bring Oakley home.
Then maybe I can tackle the matter of my love life. After all, I’m ready to get back in the saddle.
And who better to help me than the cowboy who once promised me forever?
Saddle to Sunup is a friends-to-lovers romance set in small town Montana, with a queer awakening for a single dad in his forties, a reunion that feels a lot like a second chance, playful banter, a bit of rope, and one very HEA. It’s book 3 in The Darling Brothers series but can be listened to as a standalone.
©2025 Emmy Sanders (P)2025 Emmy SandersAs I’ve said before, I absolutely love Emmy Sanders’ writing. It’s beautiful and poetic, with vivid, colorful descriptions that somehow never feel repetitive. Each book in this series has its own distinct emotional atmosphere, and Saddle to Sunup carries a quiet, calm, and deeply warm tone throughout.
I loved that this story focused on two adults over 43. Their maturity, honesty, and emotional depth felt incredibly refreshing. Lawson, especially, stood out to me — he speaks his truth almost without filter, and that raw honesty made his journey even more compelling.
Oakley was such a beautiful character for me. I absolutely loved his calm confidence, his steady support, and the quiet way he protects Lawson without ever overpowering him. His coolness balanced Lawson’s emotional intensity perfectly — and let’s be honest, those heterochromatic eyes didn’t hurt either. 👀🤎
The subtle Peter Pan interpretation woven into the story was such a lovely touch. At its core, this book is about self-discovery, sexual awakening, and finally allowing yourself to choose happiness without apology and a friendship that bonds over decades. As a complete sucker for the childhood friends-to-lovers trope — especially when Emmy writes it — this one definitely worked for me. Their friendship and dynamic was beautiful to watch.
That said, while I truly enjoyed this installment, it didn’t quite reach the emotional high of Sweet Like Whiskey or To Catch a Firefly for me. Still, it was an excellent read, made even more special by appearances from all the Darling brothers.
My only small criticism is some initial confusion in the early chapters, where Oakley’s ex-boyfriend Stevie is referred to with “they/them” pronouns. I fully respect pronouns, but in this context — where other queer characters are consistently referred to as him/his — it momentarily pulled me out of the story.
The narration once again was fantastic. Kale Williams continues to impress with his calm, warm, and deeply manly voice. His performance for both characters felt natural, emotional, and perfectly suited to the tone of the story. The spice was well done — intimate and satisfying without being over the top.
