El narrador es el propio autor de esta novela. Varón de 44 años. Está escrita en presente como tiempo verbal y ambientada en Cádiz (España) justo antes del estallido de la guerra civil. El narrador adopta un estilo mixto. Aunque narra en tercera persona la mayor parte del tiempo, se permite intervenciones en segunda persona a modo de pensamientos dirigidos a los personajes, específicamente a María, la protagonista. Esto le da un toque de cercanía, como si estuviera acompañando al personaje y cuestionándolo o aconsejándolo, aunque el personaje no lo escuche directamente.

The narrator is the author of this novel. He is a 44-year-old man. It is written in the present tense and is set in Cadiz (Spain) just before the outbreak of the civil war. The narrator adopts a mixed style. Although he narrates in the third person most of the time, he allows himself to intervene in the second person in the form of thoughts directed at the characters, specifically at Maria, the protagonist. This gives it a touch of closeness, as if he were accompanying the character and questioning or advising him, even though the character does not hear him directly.
