Über diesen Titel

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the master of the legal thriller comes a “deeply engaging and enjoyable” (USA Today) novel featuring one of John Grisham’s most colorful, outrageous, and vividly drawn characters ever.

ONE OF THE WASHINGTON POST AND NPR’S BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR

On the right side of the law—sort of—Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He drinks small-batch bourbon and carries a gun. His office is a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, and fine leather chairs. He has no firm, no partners, and only one employee: his heavily armed driver, who also happens to be his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddie.

Sebastian defends people other lawyers won’t go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house.

Why these clients? Because Sebastian believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial—even if he has to bend the law to secure one.

Kritikerstimmen

“Terrific . . . inventive . . . John Grisham still makes it look easy [with] distinctive characters, tricky legal predicaments and rogueishly cheating ways to worm out of them.”—Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post

“With a blunt, rude, gravelly poetic wiseguy voice . . . Rudd comes across as a kind of twenty-first-century Philip Marlowe.”—Benjamin Percy, The New York Times Book Review

“Deeply engaging and entertaining . . . [Grisham finds] intense drama in the little skirmishes that play out across our legal system every day.”—Charles Finch, USA Today

“Grisham has taken a step in an intriguing new direction.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

The n novel is Too short and the ending is too sudden. Could have been better.

Not an overwhelming story

I came across this audio book by an audible recommendation. The short summary of the story made me curious immediately. Rogue Lawyer is the first novel by John Grisham I am listening to. Until then I only got in touch with some of his former novels brought to the big screen first of all The Firm or The Jury.

Rogue Lawyer put me into the story due to its episodically telling which is entertaining without being superficial and is read fluently without being simple narrated from the perspective of an even unusual kind of lawyer.

Protagonist Sebastian Rudd deals with clients for whom in most cases no ordinary lawyer wants to fight for because there is hardly a chance to win the trial or the customers themselves are a threat: So why Rudd? Because the legal system already made its judgement about the convicts long before or as Rudd says “It is not about justice. It is about winning.” This statement does not really manifest the belief in justice so far from a naïve or idealistic point of. The city or the people living in their peaceful and clean surroundings want justice from their very personal point of view – often far away from pinning the real criminals.

It is about careers, money or power. This is one side of the medal: Rudd also defends accused ones who did some bad crimes and tries to come to a more convenient agreement in the court or closed doors behind it. As Rudd knows that jurisdiction often helps itself to push the trial to come to the verdict he uses the same means to reach for his and his client interests. So on the one side Rudd has a strong conscience for justice whereas the lying and the base motives in court bring him to the conclusion to fight back with the same weapons. So at the end as a listener to that story your confidence in justice is some kind of challenged and of course you can only guess that Rudd has not many friends…this becomes obvious as he gets drawn into a case he loses more and more control about and where his family gets involved – especially his only son and leftover of a shattered marriage caused by a very perfidious move by the so called good guys.

Me myself I can realize that nevertheless Rudd has a deep settled understanding for justice – it is first of all an honest understanding. He only has to act out in left field to come to an end he is targeting for. Acting in this shadow zone between “good” and “bad” – “legal” and “illegal” Rudd is moving to reach for a finally very noble aim – justice in its original meaning: giving the accused a chance to come to his “human right” – nevertheless how this could end up or what “initiatives” have to be taken. In this case I have a lot of sympathy for him.

I hope to listen to some more narrations of this lawyer. Clear recommendation because I am convinced this is a quite realistic portrayal thanks to Mr. Grisham who is the credible factor here.

Cynical snapshot in time of US the legal system

Nicht der beste Grisham, aber die unterschiedlichen Stories ergaben einen tollen Spannungsbogen . Ich warte auf den nächsten Grisham.

Hat mich gut unterhalten.

The book is made of a few smaller stories, tangled up together. A very likable main character, but a little too simple ending...

Ziemlich Gut!
