    Inhaltsangabe

The Age of Kings is dead. And I have killed it.

Field Marshal Tamas' coup against his king sends corrupt aristocrats to the guillotine and brings bread to the starving. But it also provokes war in the Nine Nations, internal attacks by royalist fanatics and greedy scrambling for money and power by Tamas' supposed allies: the Church, workers' unions, and mercenary forces. Stretched to his limit, Tamas relies heavily on his few remaining powder mages, including the embittered Taniel, a brilliant marksman who also happens to be Tamas' estranged son, and Adamat, a retired police inspector whose loyalty will be tested to its limit.

Now, amid the chaos, a whispered rumour is spreading. A rumour about omens of death and destruction. Just old peasant legends about the gods returning to walk the Earth. No modern educated man believes that sort of thing.… But perhaps they should.

    Slow start, but worth it

The book starts a bit slow and it took me a while to really care about the characters, but once it gets rolling it really grips you until the very end. The reader is incredible and acts out each person so well, that you can hear their emotions and pain through his voice.
I'm looking forward to the second book.

    Very disappointing

This book was so hyped and the reviews so great I wanted to check it out. First of all, the cover is awesome! It is so rich and detailed. Sadly, the story is not. In a very Male-oriented story, the characters appear very two dimensional with no character growth. It took me a long time to understand who is who also because the narrator kinda of always sounded the same to me. In general, he has a great voice I heavily associate with grimdark but might be better suited to fewercharacters. The story itself was boring, the women played a minor role of at all, often ignored and standing very much on their own without having a background, their own interests to explore, Someone to speak at and not really with. The magic system is nothing original but I don’t expect it to be either but who can wield what type of magic and to what degree sometimes wasn’t explained at all or only so shortly that it would be forgotten and when you could conviently add a thing magic can do when you need it.
Also, the story is INCREDIBLY heavy on telling. It’s not shown what the characters think, you are told and sometimes that does not get corroborated with what the author shows. The writing itself is the problem for me, not the overall plot

    Great audiobook

Gripping from the beginning. The powder mage and sorcery system is well set in the fantasy world. Very inspiring. I loved it.

    Good book, unfortunate voice acting

Really liked the story and characters. Unfortunately the voice actor gives most characters more or less the same voice, which makes it sometimes tough to follow and distinguish the characters if you only spend like 80% attention while doing chores or something.

Other than that I highly recommend it and will keep listening to the next books anyway (:

    Revolution and Magic

It's a quite interesting story and world, a bit like French revolution but with magic.
There are many interesting characters, much action and all in a kind of low-tec-steampunk world.

to keep it short - it's a fun and action rich story nothing too deep but I enjoyed it a lot.

    Overall awesome

The story is truly addicting and binding. On top if that it is new. Not some story rewritten by dozens of authors in an ever repeating pattern. It makes the story hard to predict and truly breath taking.
Not to forget the simply awesome performance by Christian Rodska. I might end up giving an audio book a try simply because he is reading it.
