Über diesen Titel

In this sweeping novel, James A. Michener chronicles eight tumultuous centuries as three Polish families live out their destinies. The Counts Lubonski, the petty nobles Bukowksi, and the peasants Buk are at some times fiercely united, at others tragically divided. With an inspiring tradition of resistance to brutal invaders, from the barbarians to the Nazis, and a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, their common story reaches a breathtaking culmination in the historic showdown between the ruthless Communists and rebellious farmers of the modern age. Like the heroic land that is its subject, Poland teems with vivid events, unforgettable characters, and the unfolding drama of an entire nation.

Obwohl es hier viel um die Geschichte von Polen geht ist dieses Hörbuch sehr schön erzählt und spannend. So könnte Geschichte immer vermittelt werden.

Geschichte schön erzählt

A good novel that describes the history of Poland following the history of 2 families. It Shows also some important elements of the polnish culture. And the important actions that stop the spread of an invasion in Europe).
However the book concentrates too much in the nazi period showing in detail the abuses of the regimen against polnisch and jude people. But miss important parts of the country reconstruction after 1918 (the name of Dmowiski).

A good historical novel about Poland

I read Poland on paper years ago and remember being absolutely enthralled by Michener's 800-year saga of the Lubonskis, Bukowskis, and Buks. Coming back to it in audio format, the story itself is still quite good, but the narration is—to put it mildly—a massive hurdle.
My biggest complaint is the delivery. The narrator sounds like a bizarre cross between Captain Kirk and a robotic Polish Lektor reading an Ikea instruction manual. Every. Single. Word. Is. Its. Own. Sentence. The staccato rhythm and constant, under-dramatic punctuation suck the life out of the prose and make the already rough Polish pronunciations even harder to endure.
Even more distracting is that the performance feels exactly like a "Polish Lektor"—that specific style of voice-over used in Poland for foreign films where one man with a flat, monotone voice reads every single line of dialogue. Having a 14th-century peasant girl, a 20th-century general, and a Nazi occupier all voiced with the exact same impassioned inflection made it impossible to stay immersed. It felt less like a professional performance and more like listening to a 30-hour live translation of a book I already loved.
Buyer Beware: If you aren’t used to the "Lektor" style or find William Shatner-esque pausing grating, you might want to stick to the physical book or Kindle version. The story is a classic, but this particular narrator makes the 30-hour journey feel like a much longer, very repetitive lecture.

Great Story, but the Narrator is a "Polish Lektor" in Starfleet Uniform
