Britain's bestselling SF writer returns to outer space.
In AD 2329, humanity has colonised over four hundred planets, all of them interlinked by wormholes. With Earth at its centre, the Intersolar Commonwealth now occupies a sphere of space approximately four hundred light years across.
When an astronomer on the outermost world of Gralmond, observes a star 2000 light years distant - and then a neighbouring one - vanish, it is time for the Commonwealth to discover what happened to them. For what if their disappearance indicates some kind of galactic conflict? Since a conventional wormhole cannot be used to reach these vanished stars, for the first time humans need to build a faster-than-light star ship, the Second Chance. But it arrives to find each 'vanished' star encased in a giant force field -- and within one of them resides a massive alien civilisation.

AD 3580. The Intersolar Commonwealth has spread through the galaxy to over a thousand star systems. It is a culture of rich diversity with a place for everyone. Even death itself has been overcome. But at the centre of the Commonwealth is a massive black hole. This Void is not a natural artefact. Inside there is a strange universe where the laws of physics are very different to those we know. It is slowly consuming the other stars of the galactic core - one day it will devour the entire galaxy.

Geschichte
AD 2204. An alien shipwreck is discovered on a planet at the very limits of human expansion - so Security Director Feriton Kayne selects a team to investigate. The ship’s sinister cargo not only raises bewildering questions but could also foreshadow humanity’s extinction. It will be up to the team to bring back answers, and the consequences of this voyage will change everything. Back on Earth, we can now make deserts bloom and extend lifespans indefinitely, so humanity seems invulnerable. We therefore welcomed the Olyix to Earth when they contacted us. But were the Olyix a blessing or a curse?

Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the Native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

A vast and epic story
You certainly need stamina for this huge story with so many people, worlds etc. But it's really worth it. The authors view of the future is a breathtaking one. I really enjoyed all the inventions.
I couldn't have read the book but as an audio book with John Lee's voice it was great. Shame about the cliffhanger or to say it with one of my favourite figures last words in the book: You've got to be f...ing joking. ;-)

Erst langatmig, dann spannend

Boring and Repetitive
This audiobook could easily be reduced to 1/3 it's length.
there are vastly long and boring sections of world building that are hugely uninteresting.
usually I like you well thought out world but the writers chosen way to do so doesn't resonate with me at all.
also it seems that enzyme bonded concrete is the secret protagonist in this book but it's never probably explained to you what it actually is, even when it's heavily featured in the story and giving a lot of room and mentioned many many times too much.
the female characters horribly Hollow to an extend that even as a man i cannot associate with them on any level.
parts of the story are interesting and engaging but these aren't given enough room.
I really like the alien abduction like scene viewed from the aliens few point.
I hope the second part is better.

One of the best Sci-Fi novels around
If you like intrecate despcriptions, deep world building and a good mystery this is a book for you. Political intrigues, family power games, battle action, the excitement of exploration and even e detecrive story woven into a master piece that has something on offer for almost any reader.
It's long and the pace is quite leasurely. A lot of time is spent establishing characters, technologies and places, which pays of through a incredibly deep and rich world. The motivations and actions of characters flow very naturally. If you perefere fast paced action like in e.g Tom Scalzis Old Mans War, you might not like this book.
