Couldn’t stop… the tears

Eigentlich wären hier viele Zutaten für Spannung vorhanden. Eine interessante Prämisse, ein über weite Strecken angenehmer Schreibstil, eine ordentliche Sprecherin, daraus ließe sich eine Menge machen.
Leider scheitert der Roman für mich an der Vorhersehbarkeit seiner Wendungen. Keine davon ist wirklich überraschend. Dramaturgisch sehe ich einige Schwachstellen, einen echten Zugang zur Protagonistin kann ich auch nicht finden.
Die Auflösung, wem nun der Wagen mit dem eingesperrten Kind gehört, hätte für mich mehr Raum einnehmen können, aber leider bewahrheitet sich der erste Verdacht der Protagonistin nur allzu schnell. Die nachfolgenden großen Wendungen sind dann nur allzu vorhersehbar. Viele der aufkommenden Probleme bleiben folgenlos (um die Rezension spoilerfrei zu halten möchte ich vage bleiben: Zahlreiche gesundheitliche Einschränkungen verschiedener Charaktere werden angerissen, aber echte Konsequenzen sind selten).
Stilistisch kam ich mir immer wieder vor wie bei einem auf ein unaufmerksames Publikum ausgelegten US-TV-Krimi. Muss man nun wirklich auch in Romanen ständig bereits geschehenes wieder und wieder zusammenfassen?

I really wanted to enjoy No Exit, especially since I listened to the audiobook, but unfortunately it just didn’t work for me. The premise sounded very promising: a group of strangers trapped at a rest stop during a snowstorm and a kidnapped child hidden in one of their cars. It has all the ingredients for a tense thriller, but I never felt truly hooked.

The story moved quickly, but instead of building suspense, it often felt repetitive and a bit over-the-top. Some of the characters also felt flat to me, which made it hard to feel invested in what was happening. Because of that, many of the high-stakes moments didn’t have the emotional impact I expected.

The audiobook narration itself was solid, but even that couldn’t fully pull me into the story. Overall, it wasn’t terrible, but it just never managed to grab my attention or keep me fully engaged.

If you like very fast-paced, action-heavy thrillers, you might still enjoy it. For me, though, it simply didn’t live up to the hype.
