Came here after hearing that Neil Gaiman stole a bunch from Tanith Lee for Sandman, and awful as he is, I am glad to have found these books now! Absolutely entrancing stories, wonderful writing and imagination. Also fantastic performance (I was straight up swooning whenever Azhrarn spoke). Will now check out all the other parts of this series!

Dass Tanith Lee eine erstklassige Autorin ist, wusste ich schon von einigen früheren Büchern, aber die Geschichten von der flachen, quadratischen Welt sind eine Klasse für sich. An den Redestil von Susan Duerden musste ich mich zwar zunächst gewöhnen (überdramatisch und zu emotional, dachte ich zuerst), aber wie soll man eine solche Geschichte sonst vorlesen? Die Geschichten sind krass wie Mythen, die durch die moderne Erzählweise noch eines draufbekommen. In diesem Buch ist das Paradies unterirdisch (und schwarz), die Menschen halten die Dämonen für Götter, weil sie so unfassbar schön sind. Die Götter dagegen sind immateriell, ihre Welt wie ein Kosmos, dessen thermodynamische Feder beinahe abgelaufen ist. Zwar ist das Buch eine Abfolge von Erzählungen, die aber miteinander verknüpft sind. Immer geht es um die spielerischen Eskapaden des Dämonenprinzen Azhrarn und die fürchterlichen Folgen für die Welt der Menschen. Am Ende zeigt er aber, dass er auch noch eine andere Seite hat...
