An instant New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller
SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2021 DYLAN THOMAS AWARD
An era-defining novel about the relationship between a fifteen-year-old girl and her teacher
ALL HE DID WAS FALL IN LOVE WITH ME AND THE WORLD TURNED HIM INTO A MONSTER
Vanessa Wye was fifteen-years-old when she first had sex with her English teacher.
She is now thirty-two and in the storm of allegations against powerful men in 2017, the teacher, Jacob Strane, has just been accused of sexual abuse by another former student.
Vanessa is horrified by this news, because she is quite certain that the relationship she had with Strane wasn't abuse. It was love. She's sure of that.
Forced to rethink her past, to revisit everything that happened, Vanessa has to redefine the great love story of her life – her great sexual awakening – as rape. Now she must deal with the possibility that she might be a victim, and just one of many.
Nuanced, uncomfortable, bold and powerful, My Dark Vanessa goes straight to the heart of some of the most complex issues of our age.

"The book everyone will be talking about." (Louise O'Neill)
"...a package of dynamite." (Stephen King)
"Compulsive. I burned through the first half in such a fever that I lost sleep, I missed meals...a lightning rod." (Washington Post)
This makes you question so much. Is this really ok? No its not, clearly it’s not. But yeah… “that” is not so bad…is it?
This book got me angry and sad all the way of feeling sorry for all the characters, even for Strane. I needed a break to process everything what is going on. Feeling personally violated, but 15-year-old vanessa makes you believe it’s okay. It’s okay. She can make it through it, and so do you. I was on my tiptoes all the way till the end.
Thank you Kate and thank you Grace.
#metoo: having an old man sticking his tongue in your moth as he hands you 50€... and thinking “well… I also got something from it, right?” I mean, I didn’t ask for it, especially not with 14 working your first job at this run-down restaurant (I was cleaning, not serving) and trying to be nice to everybody. At the beginning I though it’s not as bad as being Vanessa. Realising the harsh lesson this book tries to teach you, it’s still not ok. “This” is not okay and you shouldn’t brush such things under the rug.
i love it, for every wrong reason
