New Year’s Eve, 1921.
As her reputation steadily grows, Posie Parker is asked to accompany the utterly charming Inspector Richard Lovelace of Scotland Yard on an undercover mission of entrapment. Their destination is a glittering New Year’s Eve party at the remote Maypole Manor in Kent, the cliff-top home of Lord Robin Glaysayer. Scotland Yard have one of the house guests in their sights as being a dangerous criminal, but which guest is it? Among the twelve guests are a famous film star, an artist, an Italian nobleman, a government spy, and the Glaysayer sisters, one of whom is a mysterious clairvoyant and the other is a society ‘Bright Young Thing’.
As the party gets going, and a thirteenth house guest unexpectedly arrives, the champagne flows, and the snowstorm outside turns unsettlingly into a blizzard. Then their host, Lord Robin, is found murdered, and another guest too. But why?
Cut off, and with no help coming, the Inspector and Posie’s skills are tested to breaking point as they try to find the murderer before they attack again.
A glittering 1920s cozy mystery, full of fast-paced intrigue and glamour, sure to thrill fans of Agatha Christie, Downton Abbey, Sara Rosset and Helena Dixon.

Setze die Serie fort
Ebenfalls zu viel ist das product placement, die wirklich aufdringliche Schleichwerbung in den ersten Kapiteln. Gottlob legt sich das dann weitgehend, wenn die Handlung in Schwung kommt.
Erst recht zu viel ist schließlich, daß bis auf eine einzige Person alle nicht sind, wer und was sie zu sein vorgeben. Gleich drei unterschiedliche Verbrechergruppen aus der Spionage-, Drogen-, und Schmuggelbranche versuchen mit mehr oder weniger Erfolg, einander und alle anderen auf diesem Sylvestertreffen zu ermorden. Es wird erstochen, gleich doppelt vergiftet, chloroformiert und mit Pistolen gedroht, was das Zeug hält. Da fallen die Geheimgänge, versteckten Juwelen und Hellsehereien kaum noch ins Gewicht.
Clare Wille müht sich heldenhaft, diesem Chaos stimmlich Struktur einzuhauchen. Ein wahrer Lichtblick und eine 5 Sterne Leistung.
Bleibt zu hoffen, daß dieses Buch ein einmaliger Ausrutscher war und der Rest der Serie nicht ganz so wirr ist. Der Vorgänger, The Tomb Of The Honey Bee, war zwar auch voller Nebenhandlungen, aber doch noch so gut strukturiert, daß ich mich auf Maypole Manor eingelassen habe. Ich muß mir noch sehr gründlich überlegen, ob ich das Risiko eines weiteren Bands eingehe.
