Über diesen Titel
On his eighth birthday, Edward is banished from his beloved home, Thornfield Hall, to learn his place in life. With the help of friends, enemies and a series of eccentric mentors, he discovers more than he might have wished about the ways of the men - and women - who will one day be his peers.
Edward's journey takes him to the warm, languid shores of Jamaica, where he becomes entangled in the beguiling, unchecked lifestyle of the island, and with a certain enticing heiress. But the choices he makes there will haunt him desperately. It is only when he is finally able to return home, and encounters one stubborn, plain, young governess, that Edward can see any possibility of redemption - and love.
Rich and vibrant, Edward's evolution from tender-hearted child to Charlotte Bronte's passionately tormented hero will completely, deliciously, and forever change how we read and remember Jane Eyre.

A winner! Even if you never read Jane Eyre, you would still find Mr Edward Fairfax Rochester fascinating and hang on every word of his extraordinary story, told in perfect nineteenth-century language. A richly rewarding read (Margaret George, New York Times bestselling author)
With flair and heart, MR ROCHESTER tells the story that legions of Jane Eyre fans have been waiting more than a century to hear. Sarah Shoemaker's impressive debut takes readers into the mind of one of literature's most vexing and compelling romantic heroes and paints a nuanced portrait of a man torn between responsibility and passion. Packed with historical detail and a fresh look at a classic story, MR ROCHESTER is a page-turning delight (Tara Conklin, New York Times bestselling author)
Prepare to be swept off your feet by Sarah Shoemaker's stunning debut, MR ROCHESTER. As one of countless readers who adored Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, but never quite understood what Jane saw in Mr Rochester, I was spellbound. Beautifully written, exquisitely crafted, and deeply engaging, MR ROCHESTER is pure book club gold (Mary Sharratt)
Shoemaker's detailed writing will transport readers to a bygone age of romance and heartbreak

Edward Rochesters time in Jamaika was quite interesting but somehow not fully convincing. And after his return to England something really seemed off. The storyline jumped over his mistresses and directly to him meeting Jane. But Charlotte Brontes story-telling are unmatched. It was a bold venture to tell her masterpiece anew and I wouldn´t say it completely failed. Nevertheless I was disappointed. Why and how did he fall for plain, poor, obscure and little Jane? There was almost no back and forth in his falling for Jane and persuing her. It was not described, why every encounter between the two made him long for her more. Him coming to the decision of marrying her didn´t cost him any effort. There was a made-up storyline that could excuse his hopes in marrying her legally, even though the original makes clear he knew from the very beginning that there was no way. Where were his struggles, where were his doubts, where his conscience about the betrayal? When everything fell apart, there was some brief remorse -and then him going back to business.
This is a really well-written coming-of-age story about Edward Fairfax Rochester. But it didn´t capture the deeply troubled, undeniable and desperate relationship between Mr Rochester and Jane Eyre. In fact both their characters seemed rather shallow. The had to fall for one another just because it´s in the Jane-book. Mr. Rochesters sometimes strange behaviour was never explained nor did Jane get enough space as his beloved and deeply admired counterpart. In Jane Eyre, Jane doesn´t say much - but we get some explaining because she´s the narrator and we get to know her thoughts and feelings. In this book she´s almost wiped out instead of being the great heroine that she is.
Nevertheless I reckon this book a must-read for every fan of Jane Eyre. But I would also appreciate another attempt for Mr. Rochesters narrative.
well written - but...!
