Facing some hard truths
The human struggle with alpha-predators is a complex story, touching on many sensitive psychological issues and human idiosyncratic complexities our species is so much occupied with: feelings of fear, pride, arrogance, uniqueness, dominance, etc. And in all of that, the incremental disappearance of alpha-predators indicates a slow ecological meltdown that we struggle to comprehend or willingliy avoid to admit or consider.
It is a hard truth to tell, but so far in human history, for most parts - where there are humans, there seems to be little place for natures other top predator species. If that is an inevitable ecological and evolutionary truth or just a temporary and ultimatly superable shortcomming in the anthrocentrism of our species ... maybe only time will tell. Meanwhile each single one of us can aim to make a difference in their own sphere of influence.
Quammen struggles with being optimistic. But facing a hard truth is the only way to make a difference. And a difference we should make...
