Über diesen Titel

Bombay, New Year's Eve, 1949

As India celebrates the arrival of a momentous new decade, Inspector Persis Wadia stands vigil in the basement of Malabar House, home to the city's most unwanted unit of police officers. Six months after joining the force she remains India's first female police detective, mistrusted, sidelined and now consigned to the midnight shift.

And so, when the phone rings to report the murder of prominent English diplomat Sir James Herriot, the country's most sensational case falls into her lap.

As 1950 dawns and India prepares to become the world's largest republic, Persis, accompanied by Scotland Yard criminalist Archie Blackfinch, finds herself investigating a case that is becoming more political by the second. Navigating a country and society in turmoil, Persis, smart, stubborn and untested in the crucible of male hostility that surrounds her, must find a way to solve the murder - whatever the cost.

Met my very high expectations. Great story, very interesting characters, lovely twists, intelligent plots and an extraordinary reader/narrator. Totally satisfied!

Superb

At first I wondered if I really wanted to start a series set in India in the 1950s, but it is a well told crime story based around India’s first female police inspector, Persis. While it took me a little to warm to her (she’s very prickly), I soon got swept up in the story and enjoyed the characterisation of the individuals and their relationships to each other. Who killed famous Sir Charles at his own New Year’s Eve party? It turned out everyone had a motive… and Persis has her work cut out to investigate as a “mere“ women amongst the upper class suspects, against the backdrop of independence from Britain, partition and sectarian violence. For me, it was soon clear who the murderer was, so no huge plot surprises, but the story more than made up for it, and I learnt a lot about this period! I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the next in the series.

the clever interweaving of historical events into a many-faceted crime tale along with the well delineated characters proved edifying as well as entertaining.

the author has created a fascinating picture of India after the partition
