There is nothing likeable about the narrator or any of the other human characters; a trend which seems to be generally on the increase with modern writers, unfortunately.
Normally I like A.M. Homes' writing, which can be funny, discerning, quietly observant. This venture into a much too long and meandering – and quite frankly – boring story, which at the most merited being cut down to an eighth of its length, if there were still capable editors at hand (Maxwell Perkins, where are you?), might still have a chance, if it were read as a physical book, which would allow you to put it down, i.e. repurpose it.
