It is not simply for himself that Valjean must stay free, however, for he has sworn to protect the baby daughter of Fantine, driven to prostitution by poverty.

It's beyond me that the publisher of the audiobook couldn't be bothered to pick a narrator who is able to pronounce French names and words. Even easy ones like 'duc' or 'femme' (!) were mispronounced. A disgrace.
