Über diesen Titel

"Pete, look mate, I'm sorry but there's no easy way to say this. Lydia's dying."

These are the words Peter Mackenzie wakes up to on a chilly March morning in 2012. Over the next 48 hours, his life is thrown into chaos, catapulting him into the decision to leave the UK and return to Australia, the country from which he was exiled 30 years earlier. The opportunity to see Lydia, his mother, one last time means confronting his family, friends, and the community of Lazarus that he abandoned as a teenager.

Lazarus Remembered is a powerful family drama that explores the challenges within non-traditional family structures. A story about secrets and lies, love and loss, reinvention and redemption, but most of all about how the pressure to conform to society’s expectations can tear lives apart.

There has been said a lot about what the novel is all about already, so I won`t repeat it in my own words.
Additionally I do not want to spoil the suspense or the final big surprise.
So why has „Lazarus Remembered“ caught me right from the beginning?
Is it because Francesca Tomlinson`s voice – so warm, pronounced and changing dialects so easily, pulled me into the story right away? Or the realistic characters – never overemphasized? Or the very human reaction towards the circumstances so many years ago, when everything was different compared to today? Guess it was all of that.
I do not know which scenes impressed me most: was it the Cresta interview, Cheryl`s admitting words, the farewell to Lydia, Zoe`s dare-devil attitude or Jeff`s description of the miscarriage or the (mentioned above) surprising development in the end?
This novel in a printed version must be a good reading experience. However - the audioplay ( A story told with words & music) is even much, much better.
The background music is very subtil, not disruptive or overwhelming. The music fits nicely into the story. Background sounds add a wealth of additional sensual experiences. E.g. the muffled voice within a telephone call, voices in a pub, that are making you to be! part of the story.
The songs give a perfect fit to the end of an important chapter and the opening of a new one. The song „Frankly“ is a catchy song, I can`t forget.
Be aware: the changes in time and locations are asking for the audiences complete attention. 12 hours need some planning for the freedom to listen. So take your time – it is definitely worth it.

Great story, perfect narration, surprising end
