Longlisted for the Booker prize 2021
The sun always has ways to reach us.
From her place in the store, Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, watches carefully the behaviour of those who come in to browse and of those who pass in the street outside. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change for ever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans.
In Klara and the Sun, Kazuo Ishiguro looks at our rapidly changing modern world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator to explore a fundamental question: what does it mean to love?

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half brother, Ben, didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up - to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? - he’s not there. The longer Ben stays missing, the more Jess starts to dig into her brother’s situation, and the more questions she has.

Geschichte
For all of neuroscience's advances, we've made little progress on its biggest question: How do simple cells in the brain create intelligence? Jeff Hawkins and his team discovered that the brain uses map-like structures to build a model of the world - not just one model, but hundreds of thousands of models of everything we know. This discovery allows Hawkins to answer important questions about how we perceive the world, why we have a sense of self, and the origin of high-level thought.

In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. But when an older man - a fellow slave - seeks to gain favor by preaching the master's gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own.

Interesting ideas and thoughts, but nothing was ever done with them. The story continued on its merry way and no one had to really make any sort of difficult decisions.

Rather just ok
I expected more to be honest. The story or rather the idea of it has potential. But then... very long and a bit tiresome talks that do not seem to lead anywhere, long observations without need... Not really boring but I always found out, they were unnecessary in the end. Don't know. Whenever it became interesting or exciting it was not going anywhere. So, I am a bit unsatisfied and confused. Pity.

Good book but frustrating
I really liked the protagonist and how she viewed and interpreted the world around her. Her alien and often naive, yet oddly perceptive mind showed a deeply flawed human society through the eyes of someone decidedly not human. The themes of loneliness, injustice, and life as a disposable commodity were frighteningly accurate as well as poignant. However, the ending, as logical as it was, depressed and frustrated me. This isn't a flaw per se, but something subjective, an emotional response that the story elicited. Books are meant to make us feel, and this one left me feeling impressed, yet small and empty. It's a very good book. I shan't be reading it again.
