Two families overlap by Michael and his small son Hamish visiting Adam, an old friend of Michael's, and witnessing Adam's family conflicts. This gives Michael the opportunity to think about his also difficult relationship with his wife Rebecca. The idiosyncrasies and personal problems of each of the many characters in the book are exaggerated to the extent that the characters turn into caricatures, thus losing credibility. The comparisons used to enhance descriptions are exaggerated in a similar way. If that is Rachel Cusk's intention, well done! However, as a reader, I neither enjoyed it nor learnt from it. The unravelling of Michael's relationship with Rebecca is stuck on the end and a clear development missing. As to the narrator, it is always difficult for a man to represent a woman and vice-versa. Here the attempt of imitating women's voices makes all female characters sound more or less hysterical.
