‘A darkly funny riot’ The Times, Book of the Month
A GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD FOR FICTION 2024
Would you want to know what your colleagues say behind your back?
Jolene certainly doesn’t.
She’s riddled with anxiety, depressed, and hates her coworkers. The less she knows about them, the better.
So when a catastrophic IT f--k up grants her access to all of their emails and private messages, she’s initially horrified. The last thing she wants is to be privy to their sad discussions about dying desk plants and marital troubles.
That’s until, with job cuts looming, she realises the power this new-found knowledge gives her.
But as she digs deeper and deeper into the private lives of her colleagues, Jolene uncovers a lot more than she bargained for… And the walls she’d so carefully built start crumbling down.
For readers who loved The Office US and Really Good, Actually comes the awkward heroine you’re about to fall in love with

Great insight into main character
I was happy with the ending. Left me satisfied. The character growth was great. It interesting to see where maximum information into other lives takes you.

Insufferable main character
The premise was promising, and I quite liked the office drama. It's both funny and sad, a combination I appreciate. Two things ruined the book for me: A cringeworthy (and in my opinion completely unbelievable) romance and the main character's constant whining. Am I supposed to feel sorry for her? Not really necessary, she feels so sorry for herself, she doesn't need anyone else's pity. But even without her insufferable self-pity I wouldn't feel sorry for her: she's a horrible person. The trauma she suffered as a teenager might explain some of her awful behaviour, but it doesn't excuse any of it. I've had my share of unpleasant co-workers, but none of them came even close.
The narrator's okay-ish. I liked her regular voice, but I found the weepy mumbling she uses for Jolene's inner musings rather annoying.
This book started as a solid 3* read, but thanks to the thoroughly annoying main character quickly dropped to 2*. But then the ending was so ludicrous and, frankly, an insult to readers (not to mention anyone who has ever had to share office space with anyone else), I decided that this really doesn't deserve a second star. So, this finds you with a measly one star rating - not so well after all.
