Civil wars are the biggest danger to world peace today - this book shows us why they happen and how to avoid them.

Most of us don't know it, but we are living in the world's greatest era of civil wars. While violence has declined worldwide, civil wars have increased. This is a new phenomenon. With the exception of a handful of cases - the American and English civil wars, the French Revolution - historically it has been rare for people to organise and fight their governments.

This has changed. Since 1946, more than 250 armed conflicts have broken out around the world, a number that continues to rise. Major civil wars are now being fought in countries including Iraq, Syria and Libya. Smaller civil wars are being fought in Ukraine, India and Malaysia. Even countries we thought could never experience another civil war - such as the USA, Sweden and Ireland - are showing signs of unrest.

In How Civil Wars Start, acclaimed expert Barbara F. Walter, who has advised on political violence everywhere from the CIA to the US Senate to the United Nations, explains the rise of civil war and the conditions that create it. As democracies across the world backslide and citizens become more polarised, civil wars will become even more widespread and last longer than they have in the past. This urgent and important book shows us a path back towards peace.

The book contained interesting concepts like anocracy, and made a solid and convincing argument about the danger of civil war lurking, whenever autocracies or democracies move through zones of anocracy and you have groups in society that stand to loose and they loose hope.
A disappointing point was her inability to distance herself from an analysis of the American context. I might be to harsh, but I thought that she herself partly was somewhat of an (multi)ethnic entrepreneur in her depiction of right-wing groups in America. In her depiction, they just seem evil and a threat. Yet, a true entrepreneur, she’s not, as her instinct tells her to emigrate if civil war came to America. I hope it won’t ever!

Ethnic entrepreneur - useful concepts.

I never imagined how fragile democracies are until 2016. The explanation of „How Civil Wars Start“ helped me understand. From now on, nobody can say we couldn't know it. A must-read for all responsible citizens, politicians, journalists, business people, and teachers (I think you get my point.)

A view into history

This is an important if frightening read that lets you better understand how (un)stable US-American democracy is right now. The “and how to stop them” part was a bit thin and abstract.

Important, frightening

Performance was good. The author however, has a problem with differentiating rhetoric from fact. Also problematic is the incomplete root cause analysis when it comes to different situations, like with Israel and Ukraine.

However - the topic is extremely important and her efforts and communication to the reader are greatly appreciated.

Not bad, but more rhetorical than fact
