It is 1987 and a small Irish community is preparing for a wedding. The day before the ceremony a group of young friends, including bride and groom, drive out to the beach. There is an accident. Three survive, but three are killed.

The live of the families are shattered and the rifts between them are felt throughout the small town. Connor is one of the survivors. But staying among the angry and the mourning is almost as hard as living with the shame of having been the driver. He leaves the only place he knows for another life, taking his secrets with him. Travelling first to Liverpool, then London, he makes a home - of sorts - for himself in New York. The city provides shelter and possibility for the displaced, somewhere Connor can forget his past and forge a new life.

But the secrets, the unspoken longings and regrets that have come to haunt those left behind will not be silenced. And before long, Connor will have to confront his past.

Norton tells a touching story and is a master of creating great characters with a lot of depth.

Seldom has an author the ability to create such rich and realistic characters, each of them relatable, if not loveable.
With Home Stretch, Norton repeated what he'd achieved with Holding... create a world in which to lose yourself.

I feel a sense of home in each of his books and love how non-judgemental he is, even with the "villan" or "nemesis" of his story.
Profoundly human, honest and kind.

Ich habe das Hörbuch in der Originalfassung bestellt, weil ich Graham Norton von seinen Talkshows kenne und dachte, ich werde ihn gut verstehen können. Am Anfang war ich mir nicht mehr sicher, aber nachdem ich ihn länger gehört habe, war ich froh vom Autor selbst das Buch vorgelesen zu bekommen. Er hat die Geschichte sehr unterhaltsam, gefühlvoll und spannend erzählt ohne "Overacting".

Die Bücher von Graham Norton sind wunderbar einfach aber doch sehr tiefgründig und sehr gefühlvoll (manchmal sogar taktvoll) erzählt. Ich bin froh, dass ich daraufgestoßen bin, egal in welcher Sprache. Seine Geschichten beschäftigen mich oft noch lange nachdem ich sie gelesen bzw. gehört habe. Home Strech ist sehr spannend, bisher mein Lieblingsbuch von ihm. Die Hauptprotagonisten stehen sich manchmal selbst im Weg (ein Bisschen typisch für Graham Nortons Figuren), aber letztendlich hinerlässt die Geschichte doch ein gutes Gefühl. Ohne zu "spoilern", möchte ich noch erwähnen, dass ich es sehr interessant finde, über das Hauptthema so viel zu erfahren.

Ich hoffe, dass noch weitere Bücher von ihm kommen werden, ich freue mich auf jeden Fall darauf.
