INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A furious, queer debut novel about embracing the monster within and unleashing its power against your oppressors.

"A long, sustained scream to the various strains of anti-transgender legislation multiplying around the world like, well, a virus." —The New York Times

Sixteen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult that raised him—the fundamentalist sect that unleashed Armageddon and decimated the world’s population. Desperately, he searches for a place where the cult can’t get their hands on him, or more importantly, on the bioweapon they infected him with.

But when cornered by monsters born from the destruction, Benji is rescued by a group of teens from the local Acheson LGBTQ+ Center, affectionately known as the ALC. The ALC’s leader, Nick, is gorgeous, autistic, and a deadly shot, and he knows Benji’s darkest secret: the cult’s bioweapon is mutating him into a monster deadly enough to wipe humanity from the earth once and for all.

Still, Nick offers Benji shelter among his ragtag group of queer teens, as long as Benji can control the monster and use its power to defend the ALC. Eager to belong, Benji accepts Nick’s terms…until he discovers the ALC’s mysterious leader has a hidden agenda, and more than a few secrets of his own. Perfect for fans of Gideon the Ninth and Annihilation.

Normally not a big fan of horror and gore. But this? Holy hell, I enjoyed this - a lot.
It fits very well together with the theme of dysphoria and tr4ns existence. I haven't felt this close to/represented by any fictional character before, and that's saying a lot considering I'm an old bookworm.
I guess it soothed something in the closeted teen I used to be, the scared and angry young guy that still lives inside me. Kudos to AJW for writing this gem, and kudos to the team who made it into a great audio book!

I never thought I could enjoy body horror, but here we are

This book takes up a different angle to the classic apocalypse. I found the main character to be really irritating at times, which i could contribute to him being a 16 year old teen haha. it sometimes annoyed me tho
i loved the points of views that were not benji, even though there aren't many. Also a bit iritating were the priorities of some interactions, but they do make sense from the standpoint that this is a book for adolescents.

the fundamentalist-brought apocalypse was well executed, even though there were quite some elements that need a heightened suspense of disbelief.

overall it was a bit better than average, i think i just wasn't the perfect audience to enjoy it as much as it could have been enjoyed

Interesting trans dystopia

this was one of the very few books that actually made me nauseous during some of the more gory descriptions, which is a feat. I really enjoyed following the main character along - not necessarily always agreeing with everything he did, but he was well written enough to make it understandable and make you sympathise with him and his lot in the post apocalyptic hellscape he survives in.
the world building wasn't the focus of this story, but served as a good backdrop to the personal journeys of the leads over the course of the book.
the writing itself was fantastic and had me hooked in the first chapter, the performances of the narrators did the rest - especially the main character's was outstanding.
most definitely a recommendation if you have a stomach for gore and finding queer... well, if not joy, then at least survival against all odds.

post apocalyptic queer horror

From the description maybe I should have guessed it but I did not expect such an overly simplified, almost juvenile Prose. The premise is good, and I probably would have loved it, if I was still 15. But the writing reminds me of Fourth Wing. Way to stuck in a whiney protagonists head, and worst of allx it follows the pattern of.:
One sentence said... Thee lines of exposition about it. To be perfectly fair I only listened to 4 chapters, then returned. Would not recommend if prose is important to you.

Good Premise but very YA
