Growth is manifested in annual increments of continental crust, a rising gross domestic product, a child's growth chart, the spread of cancerous cells. In this magisterial book, Vaclav Smil offers systematic investigation of growth in nature and society, from tiny organisms to the trajectories of empires and civilizations.

Smil takes listeners from bacterial invasions through animal metabolisms to megacities and the global economy. He begins with organisms whose mature sizes range from microscopic to enormous, looking at disease-causing microbes, the cultivation of staple crops, and human growth from infancy to adulthood. The book gives an extended overview of growth as a general pattern, including a wide updated review of both data and models. The deeper takeaways of the book will only stick enough to your mind if the reading is complete and continued , so I appreciated the audio version, which was masterfully recorded. the nuances of the data cited can be left for consultation of the printed or digital versions.

Additional problem in the audio-version: No diagrams.
So better go for the printed version and use "Growth" purely as a reference-book.

I really like the content book so far, but following spoken math formulas and guessing what the references to missing images ala "please refer to Illustration 6b" is showing makes this books on the verge to being incomprehensible as an audio book.
I can't understand how anybody would dare to publish this as an audio book without the obviously missing additional reference material.
