Über diesen Titel

What is human consciousness, and how is it possible? This question fascinates thinking people from poets and painters to physicists, psychologists, and philosophers. From Bacteria to Bach and Back is Daniel C. Dennett's brilliant answer, extending perspectives from his earlier work in surprising directions, exploring the deep interactions of evolution, brains, and human culture.

Part philosophical whodunit, part bold scientific conjecture, this landmark work enlarges themes that have sustained Dennett's legendary career at the forefront of philosophical thought. In his inimitable style - laced with wit and arresting thought experiments - Dennett shows how culture enables reflection by installing a bounty of thinking tools, or memes, in our brains. Language, itself composed of memes, turbocharged this interplay. The result, a mind that can comprehend the questions it poses, emerges from a process of cultural evolution.

An agenda-setting book for a new generation of philosophers and other researchers, From Bacteria to Bach and Back will delight and entertain anyone who hopes to understand human creativity in all its wondrous applications.

It's rare to find a comprehensive, scientifically sound, philosophy book that has left the past centuries behind. Most philosophers and scientists still dwell on the ancient ways of seeing things, just like the general public. Dennet provides you with an understandable path to a new comprehension (nudge nudge) (or a base from which to talk to the people around you that have not yet joined you on this path). And he does this kindly, as your friend, its a joy to accompany him on his mental pathways.
I want to join Mr. Dennet on his next bbq with the Churchlands, that would be the height of my career.
The voice is perfect, the production highly enjoyable.

Thank you Daniel Dennet

Strange book. Sounds like a random paper and a discussion about responses to it. It's like opening a book on page 200. Not recommended at all. Reader also not particularly good.

Unstructured and not with readers in mind written

Positive: This book is only about half as bizarre as "I am a Strange Loop" by Dennett's pal Hofstadter.
Negative: That still leaves a fair amount of bizarreness.

We haven't figured out the origin of life, the nature of reality, the origin of the universe (just have a look at Stephen Hawking's last theories about holography for instance), and neo-Darwinism is a very far shot from the empirically proved fact its advocates fabulate it to be.
Still, Mr Dennett assures us he has figured out the nature of consciousness: a material development following the rules of neo-Darwinism. Mind-blowing! Or rather not. Because that conclusion is neither original nor deep nor – of course – proved, and there are plenty of reasons why it seems highly unlikely to me and many others.

I've learned very little from this book - despite the unquestionably great efforts the author invested into convincing the sceptics.

Neodarwinistic blabla
