It's a real treat - Hot Fuzz meets Harry potter via hardboiled police procedural - with a compelling cast of characters and a nail-biting mystery to be solved
This is a book that I can't recommend enough - as I said before, it's a great jump on point for new readers, but it also keeps up the greatness of the previous four novels. Whilst this might be my favourite since the first novel, that doesn't mean the others are rubbish - this just has a little something extra, a little je ne sais pas.

Foxglove Summer is evocative, mysterious, engaging, and, mostly, enormous amounts of fun. Fans of the Peter Grant series will not be disappointed, and those new to the books should start with Rivers in London, safe in the knowledge that the sequels are just as good.
Foxglove Summer is urban fantasy the way it should be. The kind of book that keeps you up way past 3.00 am because you really need to 'read to the end of this chapter' and then the next ... and the next... Foxglove Summer is well paced and engrossing. You do not have to have read the previous four volumes as it stands on its own well enough, though having the history at hand is always going to help. A fun read and thoroughly recommended.

As we'd expect, each fan is going to have their favourite and this book is definitely one of mine
The story itself is intriguing with a solid mystery at its heart and it rattles along at a steady pace, whilst still allowing Peter time to enjoy the country life. It's certainly a refreshing new angle to take as the other books are set in the city. This is a great, gritty and whimsical read. 5/5 stars

I love the rivers of London series, but this one isn't as great as the others. The story could be awesome and is still entertaining, but lots is left unanswered (even more so than in other stories), the story between Peter and Beverly makes me feel like she is being sexualized, and sometimes there seem to be audio pieces inserted that sound different than the rest of it. still entertaining and a great performance, just not as great as it could be.

first time less than 5 stars to a Peter Grant

Achtung: Keine Spoiler für dieses Buch, aber Kenntnisse der ersten vier Bände werden vorausgesetzt. Wer weiterliest und Broken Homes noch nicht gelesen hat darf sich nachher nicht mokieren!

Foxglove Summer setzt kurz nach dem Ende von Broken Homes an. Peter versucht sich vom Verrat Lesleys zu erholen, als auf dem Land, nahe der walisischen Grenze, zwei Mädchen verschwinden. Was zunächst nur als Kurzvisite geplant war, wird schnell zu einem Fall, der Peter viel abverlangt...

Das Buch ist nicht so spannend wie beispielsweise der zweite oder der vierte Band, aber es hat einen eigenen Charme und legt den Fokus auf andere, bisher weniger beachtete Aspekte. In Bezug auf den Spannungsbogen, der am Ende des letzten Bandes angelegt wurde, tut sich wenig, aber es wird einiges an Boden für kommende Ereignisse bereitet.
In gewisser Weise war das Buch wie einmal Luftholen zwischen zwei spannenden Momenten - Aufbereitung, Vorbereitung, weiter gehts! Dass es nun so lange dauert bis der nächste Band kommt ist schon blöd, da würde ich gerne weniger als zwei Jahre warten um zu erfahren was in aller Welt Lesley dazu gebracht hat, Peter und die Folly zu verraten....

Vage Kenntnisse von Shakespeares Sommernachtstraum können das Hörvergnügen nochmal steigern, sind aber absolut keine Voraussetzung.


Kobna Holdbrook-Smith liest wie gewohnt absolut brilliant, er schafft es tatsächlich, Personen sofort erkennbar zu machen, auch wenn sie bisher gar nicht in Foxglove Summer auftauchten und nicht namentlich erwähnt wurden. Genial :)

Was ich besonders an den Romanen schätze ist die enge Verknüpfung zwischen der Welt wie wir sie kennen und der Welt, wie sie nur einigen wenigen wahrgenommen werden kann. Ähnlich wie Harry Potter gibt es so die unterhaltsame Möglichkeit, dass der Autor den Muggel-Leser in Geheimnisse über sein Leben einweiht, die er sonst nie erfahren hätte. Kein völliger Fantasy-Roman wie der Herr der Ringe etwa, sondern eine erweiterte Realität die viel Freiraum zum Phantasieren lässt. Schon mal im Stau gestanden und "Lux" vor sich hin gemurmelt? :D
Und außerdem: Ein Hoch an das gezielte und gleichermaßen wertschätzende Unterbringen von Schwulen, Farbigen, Heteros und Weißen in einem Buch. Geht doch!

Nun doch noch ein paar Spoiler, zwar nicht zur Handlung direkt, aber doch zu einigen Themen, die eine Rolle spielen.

Das Buch ist ganz klar dazu da, die Person Peter Grant weiter zu entwickeln. Er reift, setzt sich mit verschiedenen Themen in seinem Leben auseinander und das war schön zu lesen und zu hören. Beverley Brook taucht wieder auf und ist für ihne eine verlässliche, unterstützende und positive Freundin - das mochte ich wirklich gerne. Überhaupt hat B. Aaronovitch ein gutes Gespür dafür, seinen Personen verschiedene Facetten zu geben. Was aus ihrem Fluss wird, darauf bin ich sehr gespannt!

Dass ein paar Hauptpersonen der Handlung ziemlich fernbleiben war schade, aber ok. Schade im Gegenzug, dass die wichtigen Nebendarsteller dieses Bandes vermutlich nie mehr auftauchen, und das, obwohl sie weit über das erforderliche Maß ausgefeilt und sympathisch präsentiert wurden.


Nun das kleingedruckte Herumgemäkele:
Ein paar der "Andeutungen" wurden eher schon wie Neonreklame präsentiert: unübersehbar! "Mellisande" für die Bienenkönigen etwa, oder die Feenkönigin mit ihren glitzernden Einhörnern, um nur zwei zu nennen.
Was mich leicht irritiert hat war die seltsame Art, wie Peter damit umging, nun endlich für seine Fähigkeiten geschätzt zu werden. Statt dass er immer dafür angepöbelt wird wie in London, wird er ganz gezielt dafür gelobt und eingesetzt - und ist genervt.

Unlike others I don't mind that the background story did not move along much. Why would I? The book is another case Peter has to deal with including all the right ingredients. I love the series which I have only recently discovered.

Wer die ersten Bücher in der Serie nicht kennt, sollte nicht mit diesem Buch anfangen. Hier wird sehr viel vorausgesetzt, insbesondere über die Welt in der sich Peter bewegt, die Magie und anderen Wesen. In diesem speziellen Buch ist Peter das erste Mal nicht von verwickelt, sondern auf dem Lande. Zwei Mädchen sind verschwunden und er wird losgeschickt, herauszufinden ob ein Zauberer im Ruhestand, der in der Nähe residiert darin verwickelt ist. Insgesamt gibt es sehr viele Nebenstränge wie Leslie, die Ereignisse bei Ettersburg, der Zauberer und seine geheimnisvolle Enkelin Melissa, die Bienen... Einiges wird nicht aufgeklärt, für mich fühlte sich das ganze Buch an wie eine Überleitung zu einem größeren Handlungsbogen- geht es unter anderem diese Woche ziemlich auf sich alleine gestellt und hat nicht den Inspektor als Unterstützung wie sonst, telefoniert höchstens mit ihm. Schön war, dass Peters Liebesleben endlich mal nach vorne geht, wenn auch mit kleinem Nebeneffekt. Das Buch wird wieder, wie die letzten auch, von Kobna S-H, gelesen, der ein herausragender Vorleser ist: Eine traumhafte Stimme und unglaublich stimmungsvolle Art,
die einzelnen Person darzustellen, es wirkt fast wie ein Hörspiel. Insgesamt eine absolute Empfehlung, wenn dieses Buch auch einige lose Fäden hinterlässt. Für mich eine der besten neuen Serien, auf die ich genauso gespannt warten wir auf den nächsten Fall von Harry Dresden oder Mercy Thompson.

Out in the countryside magic has its own rules and dangers - it might even be mistaken for UFO activity - though at the end Peter Grant is happy to go home, to London.

Again it is a superb performance by the he narrator, Koba Holdbrook-Smith, with all the social, ethical and regional accents of the various protagonists. A true joy to listen to!

What makes Aaronovich’s so pleasant to read/listen to is the fact that they are true voyages of discovery. One accompanies Peter Grant on his voyage into the real of magic and it is a true detective story with police procedure and attitudes to match. Other authors of urban fantasies (f.e. Butcher, or Jacka) rather adhere to the I-know-it-all-but-can’t-tell-you school and let their protagonists rather walk like gunslingers in a western.

This particular book is a search, interesting and often funny, but towards the end a bit confusing. One gets the feeling that the end of the story arch went through several revisions. After the brilliant “Broken Homes” waiting for this book was hard and while it is not quite up to that level the 1-year-wait for the next instalment to the series will be very long indeed.
