 In 1937, Ernest Hemingway traveled to Spain to cover the civil war there for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Three years later he completed the greatest novel to emerge from "the good fight", For Whom the Bell Tolls.

The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. In his portrayal of Jordan's love for the beautiful Maria and his superb account of El Sordo's last stand, in his brilliant travesty of La Pasionaria and his unwillingness to believe in blind faith, Hemingway surpasses his achievement in The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms to create a work at once rare and beautiful, strong and brutal, compassionate, moving, and wise.

"If the function of a writer is to reveal reality," Maxwell Perkins wrote Hemingway after reading the manuscript, "no one ever so completely performed it." Greater in power, broader in scope, and more intensely emotional than any of the author's previous works, it stands as one of the best war novels of all time.

i like the way he writes, but the story wasnt that great. nevertheless, I will look out for some other books of him.

My first Hemmingway

selten hat mich ein Hörbuch so beeindruckt! Ich kannte nur den Film von 1945, der sich ja nur auf die Kernhandlung bezieht und durch Hollywood verzerrt wurde. Die komplette Geschichte ist aber um ein Vielfaches spannender und vielschichtiger. Und Campbell Scott hat als Sprecher einem unglaublichen Job gemacht. Perfekt!

The finest book I have ever heard of

Aus heutiger Sicht weht einem der Roman mit einem Hauch Sozialromantik entgegen, bei dem die Guten eindeutig auf der eine Seite ausmachen sind, die Schlechten die Fratze des Verbrechers trifft und die Liebe an den schlechten Zeiten leidet. Hemingway verarbeitet in ihm seine Erfahrungen und die Berichte anderer aus dem spanischen Bürgerkrieg. Eine Brücke soll zerstört, der Nachschub abgeschnitten, der Kontakt zu einer Guerillaeinheit aufgenommen werden. All das ist ausgezeichnet beschrieben, die Hintergründe bestens recherchiert und trotzdem erscheint einem vielleicht wegen der Liebesgeschichte zwischen Maria und Jordan alles vor den Sittengemälden schrecklicher Verbrechen weichgespült. Das Genre hat sich seitdem weiter entwickelt. Heutzutage würde ein Autor weniger die Liebe in die Mittelpunkt rücken, sich vielmehr ausführlich der Schilderung des Gemetzels widmen, die Sprengkraft beschreiben, das Technische ausführen, es gebe keine Helden mehr, sondern nur Verlierer und alle hätten sich irgendwie schuldig gemacht. Vier Tage bleiben. Vier Tage, in denen die Zerrissenheit der Guerillaeinheit den Plan fast vereiteln läßt. Die einen sind dafür, die anderen dagegen, aber der Amerikaner richtet es. Wem die Stunde schlägt, ergeht es, wie vielen Romanen, die in ihrer Zeit Aufsehen erregt haben. Mit gehörigem Abstand wieder gelesen, fallen die Schwachpunkte stärker ins Gewicht. Das ändert nichts an der Tatsache, dass Hemingway ein ausgezeichneter Autor war, der schwer mit seinen Worten und seiner Geschichte gerungen hat. Dass der Roman überlebt hat, liegt nicht nur an der faszinierenden Vita des Autors, sondern an der Geschichte selbst.

I got bored of the weird language and the very detailed descriptions, then I kept listening and found the most beautiful depictions of the emotions that I'll not forget.
Then I got bored again and got fascinated again for several times.
And the ending was perfect, the ending was awesome.

Hemmingway captures the reader after a short while. The story builds and the characters are easy to imagine.
It made me become interested in the time of the story.

Ok in short: I expected a war novel and was disappointed when I got a drama in a war setting.

Long:
When I got the book, I had something completely different in mind.
The narration is superb! Nothing against that.
But the story ...
I heard many good things about the story, of what a great piece this book is for any war literature collector. But I was deeply disappointed.

Yes the story plays in the Spanish civil war. Yes, it is an old book and has old writing standards and ideas.
Yes there is a lot of talk about the war.
But besides two or three occasions the entire story is revolving around a very over the top love-at-first-sight romance. Many many words are wasted on oldly articulated thoughts about love and relationship. Sometimes you get the feeling the story isn’t actually about blowing bridges for an military offensive but about Spanish romance and incompetence.

I had to stop because the story didn’t develop any traction whatsoever. After 10 hours in I felt like it was dragged into a quagmire with the wife of Pablo and Maria.
Yes a little romance isn’t bad. But the book spends 1/3 of its capacity only on this. And if it’s not able to create and drama or tension in the middle section, it is not a good novel by my standards.

I can’t say it’s a bad novel, but it’s definitely subverting expectations.
