A novel of love, homelessness and learning to be fearless.

In the garden, there were three flamingos. Not real flamingos, but real emblems, real gateways to a time when life was impossibly good. They were mascots, symbols of hope. Something for a boy to confide in.

First, there were the flamingos. And then there were two families. Sherry and Leslie and their daughters, Rae and Pauline - and Eve and her son, Daniel.

Sherry loves her husband, Leslie. She also loves Eve. It couldn't have been a happier summer. But then Eve left, and everything went grey. Now Daniel is all grown up and broken. And when he turns up at Sherry's door, it's almost as if they've all come home again.

But there's still one missing. Where is Eve? And what, exactly, is her story?

Flamingo is a novel about the power of love, welcome and acceptance. It's a celebration of kindness, of tenderness. Set in 2018 and the '80s, it's a song for the broken-hearted and the big-hearted and is, ultimately, a novel grown from gratitude and a book full of wild hope.

I'm a little undecided. The book is beautifully written and the audio book is exceptionally well told. Unfortunately, even that couldn't prevent a certain boredom, because in most parts of the book nothing really happens. A young man is dumped by his girlfriend and searches his family's past for answers, not always liking what he finds. Particularly the middle of the book offers nothing more than trivialities and everyday experiences of two families in a neighborhood - told in a very nice narrative language, as mentioned earlier. Still, I dozed off several times (one should not listen to the book in bed or even in the car!). Towards the end it gets a little bit bitter, just that I found the ending (I already expected this sort of ending) rather disappointed. All in all a book for those who like to read more contemplatively and don't expect an exciting story. A small and heartwarming story told in a beautiful language if you have the patience for it. On the side, I found the constant references to 80s pop songs rather annoying, even if - or precisely because - I also grew up during this time.

Well told but a rather thin story.
