    zu viele Zeitsprünge

zu viele Zeitsprünge. Horus ist anscheinend leicht erregbar und hält nichts von klärenden Gesprächen.

    Between High and Low Literature

While the first entry in the series was mainly setup and world-building, book two finaly details the fall of Horus Lupercal in all its bittersweet irony. What makes it great is the pathos akin to theatric tradition of tragedy: Horus' fall is at the same time uncertain yet inevitable. All characters act somewhat comprehensibly, making the outcome all the more tragic.

Combined with the timeless themes of rampant ambition, critique of religion, and the nature of authoritarian rule and military power, this elevates "False Gods" to somewhat high literature. I came for cheesy Science-Fantasy, which the novel certainly delivered, but stayed for the cynical comments on the unchanging nature of man.

Had I discovered the Horus Heresy earlier, chances are I would have written my Bachelors Thesis about it instead of Miéville. It really is that good.

    Great second part

Although some story beats could be more fleshed out i was still very satisfied. Great narration and writing.

    Pretty implausible

The weakest part of the series. How Horus fell to Chaos would have been THE most interesting question of the heresy, but the explanation given here is rather... lame. And the Astartes just go along with it like sheep. If you want a good book with a way more plausible explanation, read the vastly superior "The First Heretic".
The speaker is very good though.

    Solid but frustrating

The change of author is noticeable, as character development suddenly falls very flat. Where Dan Abnett paints the Warmaster as cunning and observant, he seems to have been dropped on his head between books. In stark contrast, he doesn’t even stop to ask the most basic questions, which could have easily avoided catastrophe. Overall, the book often leaves you with the impression that plot holes and irrationalities are accepted because the titular plot has to happen. Mind you, it’s still entertaining, but somewhat infuriatingly discards any subtlety or character development Abnett set up.

Toby Longworth is brilliant as usual.

Another good entry in the series

Again, a really good book. This series is really good. The Voiceover is really high quality, and the narrator gives the characters such fitting voices.

    epic beginn of the heresy

After the prelude in the first book, this story now clears the path for the heresy.
I really like how the different characteristics of the different protagonists work with and against each other.
As a fan of the loyalist, it's sometimes hard watching the web of mischief unfold, but although I already read the book twice, the audio book was a different and good experience.
