Inhaltsangabe

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Enlightenment Now by Steven Pinker, read by Arthur Morey. Includes a bonus PDF of graphs.

Is modernity really failing? Or have we failed to appreciate progress and the ideals that make it possible? If you follow the headlines, the world in the 21st century appears to be sinking into chaos, hatred and irrationality. Yet, as Steven Pinker shows, if you follow the trendlines, you discover that our lives have become longer, healthier, safer and more prosperous - not just in the West but worldwide.

Such progress is no accident: it's the gift of a coherent value system that many of us embrace without even realising it. These are the values of the Enlightenment: of reason, science, humanism and progress. The challenges we face today are formidable. But the way to deal with them is not to sink into despair or try to lurch back to a mythical idyllic past; it's to treat them as problems we can solve, as we have solved other problems in the past. This is the case for an Enlightenment newly recharged for the 21st century.

Reason, science, humanism and progress

Turn on, tune in, drop out of the media maelstrom and read Enlightenment Now. Repeat ad infinitum.

I have the greatest respect for Steven Pinker, his thinking and understanding of the world. The Blank Slate, and The Better Angels of our Nature have determined everything else that I’ve sought and read in the last couple of years. For anyone concerned and interested in the fate of humanism, progress and an enlightened humanity - this book belongs on the bookshelf and should be read thoroughly.

Not my audiobook.

I like the genre, the ideas and the messages of the book. I am on the side of the author but probably in this case the audiobook format was not ideal.

Makes you feel good about being a scientist

Steven Pinker examines how human lives have been getting better and longer thanks to enlightenment values and exposes how different biases create the illusion of living in newly horrible times. He tries to pinpoint what has actually been responsible for progress and problems in the past and what we should do to ensure that human flourishing continues.
This is one of my favourite books of all times. More people need to be aware of how good we have it and that there has never been such a thing as a golden age that we should be nostalgic for. Definitely recommend to everyone

Optimismus!

Outstanding

Can only highly recommend to read it. The best book about reason, Enlightenment and a rational approach to understanding and living in our world, I have read in a very long time (or ever).

Is there a button for enlightenment?

Würden Sie dieses Buch einem Freund empfehlen? Warum oder warum nicht?

Pinker’s new book has got many pages and many perspectives. From pedestrian deaths in the US 1927-2015 to natural desaster deaths, from democracy versus autocracy 1800-2015 to liberal values across time and generations 1980-2005 - it’s a broad range, and Pinker shows up a lot of positive development. As driving force he identifies „enlightenment“; but as Max Weber has pointed out in the preface of his „Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism“, the development ‚from myth to logos‘ started much earlier, with the „greek wonder“ in ancient Athens (Christian Meier). And it only took place in the occident (Europe, US). The enlightenment was one step in that long and winding road. Now „We live longer, suffer less, learn more, get smarter, and enjoy more small pleasures and rich experiences.“ (Pinker) But the future is not the extension of the past. The fabric of logos is weakening, the humanities in Western universities today declare NARRATION instead of logos. The reactionary countries of autocracy and brutal dictatorship - as are Russia and Red China - are gaining power. No bright outlook. Pinker neglects these tendencies.

Würden Sie Enlightenment Now Ihren Freunden empfehlen? Warum oder warum nicht?

The topic is very important, Pinker delivers a lot of facts. Unfortunately he believes in fake climate science. He should read on WUWT and talk to Judith Curry.

No stars from me if there was an option

The book is like a bad, opinionated, evidence and research free conversation where all you want to do is get up and go. The opposite of a liberal encounter.
