Inhaltsangabe

Popular blogger Cal Newport reveals the new key to achieving success and true meaning in professional life: the ability to master distraction.

Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve. Most of us, after all, are excruciatingly familiar with shallow work instead - distractedly skimming the surface of our workload and never getting to the important part. Newport began exploring the methods and mind-set that foster a practice of distraction-free productivity at work, and now, in Deep Work, he shows how anyone can achieve this elusive state.

Through revealing portraits of both historical and modern-day thinkers, academics and leaders in the fields of technology, science and culture, and their deep work habits, Newport shares an inspiring collection of tools to wring every last drop of value out of your intellectual capacity. He explains why mastering this shift in work practices is crucial for anyone who intends to stay ahead in a complex information economy and how to systematically train the mind to focus. Put simply: developing and cultivating a deep work practice is one of the best decisions we can make in an increasingly distracted world.

Kritikerstimmen

"Engaging and substantive.... Deep Work accomplishes two considerable tasks: One is putting out a wealth of concrete practices for the ambitious, without relying on gauzy clichés. The second is that Mr. Newport resists the corporate groupthink of constant connectivity without seeming like a curmudgeon." (The Wall Street Journal)

"Cal Newport is a clear voice in a sea of noise, bringing science and passion in equal measure. We don't need more clicks, more cats, and more emojis. We need brave work, work that happens when we refuse to avert our eyes." (Seth Godin, author of Linchpin)

"As automation and outsourcing reshape the workplace, what new skill do we need? The ability to do deep work. Cal Newport's exciting new book is an introduction and guide to the kind of intense concentration in a distraction-free environment that results in fast, powerful learning and performance. Think of it as calisthenics for your mind - and start your exercise program today." (Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive)

"Deep Work makes a compelling case for cultivating intense focus, and offers immediately actionable steps for infusing more of it into our lives." (Adam M. Grant, author of Originals)

"Not for me - or my generation?"

The book is well told, the speaker does a great job and it contains some anecdotes.
While from the content side there is nothing in for me.
That you need to set aside some time for thinking and that you shall do this distraction free is not a new concept. It is taught and applied since decades or centuries.
This book is written with a background of twitter, Facebook and other social media. So it probably applies more to a millennial generation.
The core concept nevertheless could have been in a short article like on one or two pages - filling up a whole book is from my perspective a waste of time.
Other people, who are easily distracted by mails and social media might find this book more helpful - if you are not distracted too much during the 7-8hours the book takes.

"Best Self-Organizing Book in a while"

loved 'so good they can't ignore you' but this one is really stripping down how to maintain a powerful work environment and ethic of deep work and questioning learned well established habits of shallow work in times of constant interconnectedness. shows own examples of applying and progress and mentions the deep work ethic of ultra high achievers like Bill Gates. what a gem. straight edge stuff instantly to adopt. keep u updated!

    "Highly relevant, very practical"

Being in a constant state of distraction has become the new norm of being and of working.

While recent research on multi-tasking has clearly shown how ill-equipped our brains are at handling multiple complex (and even simple) tasks simultaneously, we are still continually being pushed to sacrifice focus and depth for instant accessibility and perceived flexibilty:
Open Office Spaces, expecting immediate responses to emails and the increasing taboo against defining clear times in which one does not wish to be interrupted. All of this has been shown to not only decrease productivity but also to decrease work place satisfaction and increase stress.

This book makes a clear case for why deeply focused, uninterrupted work is becoming more and more valuable in todays information economy, where there is a premium on highly complex work that is produced efficiently.

Since this focused approach is becoming increasingly rare and harder to implement, those who manage to adopt it stand to gain a tremendous competitive edge. Even more significantly, deep work binds in nicely with the concept of "flow", which has been shown to increase work- (and life-) satisfaction.

Cal Newport builds his arguments on success stories, practical examples and personal experience. He also provides a clear framework for how to implement the necessary changes to your work routine and environment.

I read and listen to plenty of books on the subject of productivity and self-development and Cal Newports books stand out very clearly above the rest. There is no unnecessary "fluff" and padding in his works, just clear arguments and practical advice. I also highly recommend his other book, "So good they can't ignore you".

Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?

The book provides good insights why you should aim at focused work instead of surfing shallow waters of distraction. You can do more and feel good about it without being burned under someone else's demands.

    "Worth the listen"

We millenials are using a lot of distracting websites without even thinking about it. We accept it as normal and don't even question it. This book argues that we have collectively lost the skill to work deeply.

"There is nothing new under the sun"
Was hat Ihnen am allerbesten an Deep Work gefallen?

I am familiar with this approach, the philosophy and the psychology behind it. I utilize a similar framework for my own work. This is not new or groundbreaking, but in many cases it might help produce better results. Alas, not everyone's guideline for a simple success story, though.

Welches andere Buch würden Sie mit Deep Work vergleichen? Warum?

It might be an addendum to Rework, GTD, The Now Habit, Distraction Addiction, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and many more. One should discover his own right way from this kaleidoscope of similar approaches.

Welche Szene hat Ihnen am besten gefallen?

I have always been an advocate of differentiating shallow work from deep work and do profit professionally from the results of the depth of work I deliver. IMHO, a top to bottom directive like facebook's huge one-hall campus will never produce good-quality results and the suggestions might not work for every industry.

Hätten Sie das Hörbuch am liebsten in einem Rutsch durchgehört?

No. The analogies presented need time and analysis for personal reflection.

Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?

If you're unfamiliar with social media interactions, computer programming (scrum etc) or university research or even Silicon Valley prominence, it won't be easy to comprehend the analogies presented in the book. But the methods are nonetheless deployable.
