Featuring a foreword by Malcolm Gladwell

Writing from both the cutting edge of scientific discovery and the front-lines of elite athletic performance, National Magazine Award-winning science journalist Alex Hutchinson presents a revolutionary account of the dynamic and controversial new science of endurance.

The capacity to endure is perhaps the key trait that separates champions and determines great performance in any field - from a 100-meter sprint to a 100-mile ultramarathon, from summiting Everest to acing finals. But what if everything we've been taught about endurance was wrong? What if we all have more potential than we think to go farther, push harder, and achieve more?

Blending cutting-edge science and gripping storytelling in the vein of Malcolm Gladwell - who forewords the book - Hutchinson reveals that a wave of paradigm-altering research over the past decade suggests that the seemingly physical barriers you encounter are mediated as much by your brain as by your body. But it's not "all in your head." For each of the physical limits that Hutchinson explores - pain, muscle, oxygen, heat, thirst, fuel - he carefully disentangles the delicate interplay of mind and muscle by telling the riveting stories of men and women who've approached (and sometimes surpassed) their own ultimate limits.

As the longtime "Sweat Science" columnist for Outside and Runner's World as well as a frequent contributor to The New Yorker and New York Times, Hutchinson draws on his background as a former national-team long-distance runner and Cambridge-trained physicist. But the lessons he draws from traveling to labs around the world and trying out new endurance-boosting techniques like electric brain stimulation and brain endurance training are surprisingly universal. Endurance, he writes, is "the struggle to continue against a mounting desire to stop" - and we're always capable of pushing a little farther.

Some of it I heard before, and some stuff reinforced things I did because they felt intuitively right. Good book with lots of scientific studies and material, all interestingly written.

Good advice scientifically backed

I am a Fitnesstrainer and found book really interesting about human performance and coaching. I am glad I listend to the book even. Though i am not a runner.

Great listening, even for none runners

A lot you know, a lot you might not have known in detail and quite entertaining even if the focus is on facts. Great book for runners!

Great for runners

Very interesting. It opens doors to new ways of trying to reach your best in endurance sport.

Great book

Good and broad overview of scientific knowledge about endurance mostly told around the attempt to break 2h for a marathon.

It covers many aspects of endurance one by one and how they could influence endurance (training, nutrition, …, but also mental factors)

Like most northern American fact books, very simple language. Unlike most northern American books, not repetitive.

What I don’t like is the fact, that the author only uses anglo-saxonian metrics (e.g. min/mile, degree Fahrenheit,…), which tha majority of the world can not relate to and which is not the scientific system (SI system). This in particular disappointing as the author has a background in physics and there are really many numbers quoted.

In addition, the product placement (e.g. The “Tesla car”) is unnecessary and distracting from the real story.

Well read, easy to listen to.

Good collection of available facts, a bit discriminating non-Anglo-Saxonians

I feel this is more suited for experienced runners. a bit too detailed and specific to appeal to a jogger :)

Gladwell: "This isn't a running book". Yes it is.

Overall, the book isn’t so bad. But it was too much (in fact most of the book) talk about scientific studies and anecdotal evidence without a clear takeaway for each aspect of endurance. I think the content had the potential to make a great story, but didn’t manage to keep it interesting

Painful to listen to tons of scientific research loosely connected to a compelling story
