This is a rivals-to-lovers story, and Ashley James delivers it perfectly. We’ve got two complete opposites forced into close proximity, and the tension between them is delicious.
Shooter is an extremely cocky, world-champion rodeo star — full of himself, outspoken, a shameless flirt, and not afraid to take what he wants. At first, he’s honestly not that likable — he’s brash, arrogant, and often a jerk to the people around him. But as the story unfolds, you start to see his layers. His vulnerability and inner turmoil come to light, and suddenly this larger-than-life character feels heartbreakingly real.
Sterling, on the other hand, is everything Shooter isn’t — humble, kind, soft-spoken, and incredibly talented. He’s new to the pro scene, still figuring himself out, and unsure about his own sexuality. The contrast between them creates the perfect storm. Their banter, the constant push and pull, the chemistry simmering beneath every interaction — it’s impossible to look away.
What I loved most was how Ashley James balanced the emotional depth with the spice. The tension and heat are definitely there (and wow, there are some steamy moments), but it’s those quiet, vulnerable scenes that really hit hard. My heart absolutely ached for Shooter when he finally opened up to Sterling about his struggles. Those moments felt so raw and intimate — exactly what makes Ashley James’s writing so special.
The narration was spot-on. Alex Kydd captured Shooter’s cocky, confident energy perfectly, while Aaron Shedlock brought Sterling’s sweetness and sincerity to life in the best way. Together, they made the story feel vibrant and emotionally layered — you could feel every shift in tone and mood.
There’s just something about Ashley James’s writing that always gets me. Whether it’s MM or MF, her emotional depth and the way she builds real, complex relationships always pull me in completely.
