Rule number one: Don't fall for my brother-in-law. It should be easy, right?
Wrong.
When I moved in with my sister over summer break, I had no intention of returning to college in the fall. A work trip for her meant a lot of time alone for me with her husband. Boone Stanton. World famous bull rider and way, way off limits.
A few late-night deep conversations between the two of us, only the midnight sky our witness, and suddenly, I can't look away. Can't keep my mind off of him.
It's in the way he works around the yard, sweaty and shirtless. The way his eyes soften and he leans into his playful side around his daughter. And it's in the way he makes me feel seen. The way he's slowly chipping away at my exterior without even realizing it.
Then one night, I see something I shouldn't. Something that makes my mouth water and my heart race. Except when he catches me, instead of stopping and reprimanding me, he… keeps going.
Now, I have the opportunity of a lifetime, but it means going on the road with him. It means living in even closer quarters than before. It also means doubling down on keeping my hands to myself and my gaze away from his dark, observing eyes.
But I'm only human, and it's only a matter of time before I crack. Before I give in and do something I can't take back.
Something that could cost me everything.

What I loved most about Burning the Midnight Oil — and I’m such a sucker for this — is the forbidden, taboo trope. Mix that with forced proximity and a pair of hot, sexy cowboys, and I’m done for. This story had everything I love: tension, emotion, heat, and heart.
I absolutely adored both characters, but Grady completely stole my heart. He’s young, but so emotionally layered — soft-spoken, kind, and beautiful inside and out. His interactions with his niece melted me, and his inner monologues had me laughing out loud. He’s the kind of character that makes you want to hug him and never let go.
And then there’s Boone — the big, burly, rugged bull rider, a young dad trying to navigate a failed marriage while wrestling with feelings he doesn’t understand. He’s always seen himself as 100% straight, but his connection with Grady challenges everything he thought he knew. The way he slowly opens up, lets Grady in, and just feels — it was beautiful. Their slow burn and emotional unraveling were done perfectly; you could feel every ounce of longing, confusion, and tenderness between them.
This book was a bit longer than the others in the series, but the pacing worked. The buildup felt necessary — it gave the relationship time to breathe, grow, and feel real. My heart ached for Grady and his beautiful, conflicted heart, and I loved how Ashley James allowed both men to evolve at their own pace.
Now, let’s talk about the narration — because wow. Nick J. Russo was completely new to me, and he absolutely stole my heart. His voice was the perfect match for Grady — gentle, expressive, and filled with emotion. His performance was flawless; I laughed, I cried, and I hung on every word. Gregory Salinas was equally brilliant as Boone — that deep, manly tone laced with intensity and quiet warmth fit the character perfectly. Together, their voices brought every scene to life. The chemistry, the quiet moments, the tension — it was all there.
The spice was also spot-on — intimate, emotional, and perfectly balanced with the story’s emotional weight.
Honestly, this might be my favorite installment in the series so far. It had everything I crave in an Ashley James book — emotion, heart, tension, depth, and narration that elevated it even further.
