Über diesen Titel

Alex Kingston reads her brand-new novel featuring River Song, from the worlds of Doctor Who.

1939, New York. Private-eye Melody Malone is hired to find a stolen ruby, the Eye of Horus. The ruby might hold the secret to the location of Cleopatra's tomb - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies.

Can Melody escape the ruby's curse?

1939, New York. River Song, author of the Melody Malone mysteries, is forced to find a reality-altering weapon, the Eye of Horus - but everyone who comes into contact with it dies. River doesn't believe in curses - but is she wrong?

From the top-security confines of Stormcage to the barbarism of first-century Egypt, River battles to find the Eye of Horus before its powers are used to transform the universe. To succeed, she must team up with a most unlikely ally - her own fictional alter ego, Melody. And together they must solve another mystery: is fiction changing into fact - or is fact changing into fiction?

Alex Kingston IS River Song, she perfectly sets the story within the Whoniverse and flawlessly resumes her role. I want more!

I like Rive Song as much as I like the era of the eleventh Doctor. I've always wanted to see more of her character. Now I'm really glad I've found this novel written by Alex Kingston who is the perfect impersonation of said River Song. Just as Matt Smith IS the Doctor, she IS his beloved wife and adventurer.

This audio book has given me eight hours of pure joy as I listened to Alex Kingston perfectly reliving her best River. She varies her voice perfectly so that you'll always know which character is speaking seamlessly switching accents. The sound effects are helping a lot in following the story without being too noisy or distracting. So, the making of this audio book has been wonderfully done.

The story itself is basically two stories, one following River Song in the process of writing her detective novel and the obstacles she has to deal with while writing, and the other story perfectly weaved into the main plot, is said detective story about one famous Melody Melone. The two plots are unraveling alongside eachother, and I really don't want to say too much. Spoilers 🙂

For me as a German with good English skills it was easy to follow and to understand everything. Alex Kingston talks not slowly but very clearly. Each word is pronounced and clearly audible - one thing I really miss watching the thirteenth Doctor, since everyone there as such a strong accent or dialect. There I have to concentrate hard to make out the correct words.
This, being my first English audio book, I was hesitant at first, but the teaser convinced me to give it a try. And I couldn't have enjoyed it more!

Every day after work I go out for a walk of 30-40 minutes. As I do so I like listening to audio books to kick-start my imagination. I watch whole worlds come to life inside my head. A few months ago I've started listening to Doctor Who audio books, but so far only in German. I just love his universe and I really miss the old days of Ten and Eleven and even Twelve. So I've found a way to go onto new adventures with the Doctor and his wonderful companions.

Dear Alex Kingston, if you ever read this, thank you very much for this very enjoyable novel. But now I really need more of this! Dankeschön! 🤗

I really wanna see more of that!

I'm probably just suffering from an overdose of Alex Kingston (after binge watching old ER episodes) but I had to force myself to finish this one. I didn't like her "hard boiled " voice at all - it was likely meant to be theatrical and over the top but it grated on my ears.

As to the story - too much of of River telling the reader what she is thinking and what the reader should think and explaining and clarifying ... in short: the narrator is telling rather than showing.

Not what I expected
