The Charles character destroys the story, he should be dead at least 5 times over and now he's seemingly nearly omniscient and nobody in this highly paranoid theocracy is able to defy this conman.
If the main antagonist of this book was a high priest of the enemy goddess or something like that and Charles was just helping them because they saved and then enslaved him, then the story would retain at least some believeability. Sadly the author threw any believeability out the window to gain more drama.
It also annoys me quite a bit why nobody just tries to convert the slave collar to the other side since they were able to do that with the spears, especially after they learn that it's made with metal from temples where all primordial gods had equal influence.
