Über diesen Titel

Grant Stockton is the devil incarnate. The cowboy turned casino-owning crime boss has been the bane of my existence for as long as I can remember—first as my older brother’s best friend, then as my guardian when my brother died at his side, and now as the rival bar owner and landlord running me into the red.

He might be the head of The Quiet Horsemen, the man everyone else in this town fears, but I’m not about to cede a single inch of ground to him. If I have to lie, cheat, and steal to keep him from finding out my bar’s underwater—well, that’s exactly what I’ll do. At least until he breaks into my apartment and discovers my secret. One that gives him all the leverage he needs to control my fate. My only reprieve is that The Horsemen are in the middle of a war, one that’s been spilling blood for the better part of a decade, and his enemies are closing in on our small mountain town. Which is why I’m taken off guard by the demand he makes in exchange for keeping my secret.

Apparently there are benefits to being at the mercy of the devil…

After my expectations weren’t quite met with the first installment — mainly because I couldn’t connect with Hazel and the cheating trope was a major letdown (especially since I loved Ramzy) — I was hesitant but still curious enough to continue the series. The premise is intriguing, and I’m always here for a dark romance with western vibes and morally gray characters.

Thankfully, The Dark Horse was, in my opinion, much better than book one.
This installment centers on Grant, the eldest brother and head of the Quiet Horsemen. While he’s portrayed as dark as the devil himself, his character development revealed something very different to me. Yes, he carries a heavy, intimidating aura — but underneath it all, he’s basically a big teddy bear with a serious soft spot for the FMC, Dakota. And that contrast? I loved it.

This is again a dark romance with an age gap, slow burn and a strong suspense element. That said… while the suspense arc took up a lot of space, I kept waiting for a satisfying, explosive payoff — and it just never came. Instead, the book ends on a cliffhanger regarding the suspense plot, which honestly left me pretty bummed after 400 pages. Like… WTF?

Still, I really liked both Grant and Dakota. I rooted for them from the very beginning, which made a huge difference compared to the first book.

🔥 As for the spice — it was more refined than in the first book and better suited to my tastes. Although I’m usually not into Daddy kink, it actually worked here. It wasn’t overused or exaggerated and fit the characters’ dynamic naturally. Definitely added heat without feeling cringey or forced. It was also less frequent and not quite as steamy as the first book.

The audiobook narration was excellent. Sean Masters and Emma Wilder did a fantastic job and truly elevated the story. Their performances added depth, emotion, and intensity, making the listening experience very engaging.

All in all, a strong improvement over book one — even if that cliffhanger still hurts.
