Ruth Messinger, acting as the event's moderator, is the president and executive director of American Jewish World Service, which works to alleviate poverty, hunger, and disease in the developing world and build Jewish life in Russia and the Ukraine.
Gerald Martone is the director of emergency response for the International Rescue Committee and has participated in several missions to Darfur.
John Prendergast, a former director of African Affairs for the National Security Council and special advisor to the State Department, is special advisor to the president of the International Crisis Group.

For over the past 10 years, the Darfur region of Sudan has been in a state of humanitarian emergency. Through Sudanese government forces and the Janjaweed militias, hundreds of thousands of civilians have been tortured, displaced, and killed.
