Über diesen Titel
From New York Times best-selling author, Penelope Douglas, comes a new stand-alone!
Three of them, one of her, and a remote cabin in the woods. Let the hot winter nights ensue....
Tiernan de Haas doesn’t care about anything anymore. The only child of a film producer and his starlet wife, she’s grown up with wealth and privilege but not love or guidance. Shipped off to boarding schools from an early age, it was still impossible to escape the loneliness and carve out a life of her own. The shadow of her parents’ fame followed her everywhere.
And when they suddenly pass away, she knows she should be devastated. But has anything really changed? She’s always been alone, hasn’t she?
Jake Van der Berg, her father’s stepbrother and her only living relative, assumes guardianship of Tiernan who is still two months shy of 18. Sent to live with him and his two sons, Noah and Kaleb, in the mountains of Colorado, Tiernan soon learns that these men now have a say in what she chooses to care and not care about anymore.
As the three of them take her under their wing, teach her to work and survive in the remote woods far away from the rest of the world, she slowly finds her place among them.
And as a part of them.
She also realizes that lines blur and rules become easy to break when no one else is watching.
One of them has her.
The other one wants her.
But he....
He’s going to keep her.
*Credence is a full length, stand-alone romance suitable for listeners 18+.

Credence was my first read by Penelope Douglas, and wow—I was absolutely hooked from the first chapter. The writing is intensely addictive, laced with suspense, emotional depth, and a unique storyline that kept me turning pages (or, in this case, glued to my headphones).
The book flirts with the reverse harem trope, but not in a typical or predictable way. It’s morally gray, emotionally complex, and yet still manages to keep character development and plot at the forefront, even with the spicy elements. That balance was impressive.
Each character in this story is broken in their own way—raw, flawed, and searching. They needed Tiernan just as much as she needed them. The way their relationships unfold is messy, sometimes uncomfortable, but deeply human.
Kaleb was a standout for me. His intense, silent presence and heartbreaking backstory made him a deeply compelling character. The epilogue from his POV? Absolutely everything. And Michael Pauley, who narrated Kaleb, was phenomenal—his voice added so much depth to Kaleb’s complexity and inner pain.
Noah brought warmth and levity. That kind of guy you dream of having next door—loyal, fun, steady. His lightness was essential to balancing out the emotional weight of the story.
Jake, the grumpy protector and father figure with a soul that was younger and more empathetic than expected, surprised me. Despite the age gap, his dynamic with Tiernan was handled with surprising nuance and care.
And then there’s Tiernan—only 18, but written with such strength, vulnerability, and depth. Watching her evolve from a lost, emotionally neglected girl into someone who learns to choose herself was one of the most rewarding parts of the story. Sofia Willingham, her narrator, captured her voice perfectly.
The mountain setting deserves its own mention. Isolated, cold, wild—it wasn’t just a backdrop, but a mood. The writing around it was vivid and almost poetic. It added a haunting beauty that mirrored the characters’ inner worlds.
This book was unlike anything I’ve read before. It’s bold, emotionally charged, and not afraid to explore taboo or difficult spaces. And yet, somehow, it all comes together in a way that feels honest and real.
Definitely one I’ll be thinking about for a long time.
intensely addictive

Personally I find, for me, interesting romance novels, to be a study in human nature. Sometimes with a highly utopian way of communicating with one another, which I find rarely occurs in such stability in real life. The latter topped off with a happy ever after and complete devotion to one another : highly unlikely though a wonderful fantasy to delve in.
That being said- this books ticks all of those categories, though resolving communication difficulties is one of the key elements of this story- pushing the scales in a more realistic direction.
What I find difficult to consume is the trauma and the resulting difficulties dealing with the aftermath. All of the protagonists deal with it in their own way and gradient of stability. It was highly relatable for me and made some of the situations that occur, less of a taboo then some might feel- not growing up in with certain norms leads to life outside of said norms sometimes. The difficulty in reading this, lies with knowing something goes against the grain in the pit of your stomach even though you can relate to the situations that unfold within the believability of the story itself.
There lies the reasoning in not giving full points to the story. Though I am happy to have listened to it, listening to it again would need me to be in a highly masochistic mood.
