Über diesen Titel

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Crashed by Adam Tooze, read by Simon Vance, with an introduction read by the author.

In September 2008 the Great Financial Crisis, triggered by the collapse of Lehman brothers, shook the world. A decade later its spectre still haunts us. As the appalling scope and scale of the crash was revealed, the financial institutions that had symbolised the West's triumph since the end of the Cold War, seemed - through greed, malice and incompetence - to be about to bring the entire system to its knees.

Crashed is a brilliantly original and assured analysis of what happened and how we were rescued from something even worse - but at a price which continues to undermine democracy across Europe and the United States. Gnawing away at our institutions are the many billions of dollars which were conjured up to prevent complete collapse. Over and over again, the end of the crisis has been announced, but it continues to hound us - whether in Greece or Ukraine, whether through Brexit or Trump. Adam Tooze follows the trail like no previous writer and has written a book compelling as history, as economic analysis and as political horror story.

loved the book, puts in context the experience I had of the European crisis while I was living in Germany. I will be listening this book again.

Insightful Analysis

Narrated perfectly I'd say.
If Adam is your guy for political and economic facts and commentary, then go for it.

I personally found Wages of Destruction to be much more of an eye-opener.
But maybe that's because the things happening were easier to make sense of, back then.

8/10

It's good, but not a must-read

Tooze has become quite the influential/popular figure, and one can tell why from this book. He covers a huge amount of ground in this volume, discussing not only the sub-prime mortgage crisis of 2008, but also the following sovereign debt crisis in Europe, the east European political crisis between the EU and Russia regarding Ukraine, the political upheavals in the US, etc. Despite covering so much ground, he does not just brush over these issues, but goes into great depth on them, also illuminating links between these seemingly distinct events. This focus on connectedness is what makes me prefer his account to the others I have read so far. The crucial thing to understand about the crisis is that it was not an isolated event in one country, but that it had international origins and consequences. Granted, there are some parts missing in the story, such as Japan, but I don’t think one can seriously fault him for such an omission given the scope of the analysis that one gets. The rest of the story will have to wait for another volume.

What is lovely about Tooze is his style. He manages to pack a ton of information into his prose without making it into a history textbook. It is written in an engaging way, which really makes him stand out from the crowd I find.

A caveat is that his perspective permeates the book. Do not expect an uninterested, unopinionated observer. Tooze has a left-Keynesian perspective and that can be felt throughout the book. I don’t mind it myself, and I find it makes the tone more lively, but it should be mentioned.

Hugely informative yet enjoyable

Great book, must read or hear. it goes into great detail, though the author structured it extremely well, so that one never loses the connection. very pleasant narrator as well.

Great book, must read

In this book, I found a profound understanding of the eurozone and its fragmentation. The Fed and its absolute power. How, in times of crisis, the world has become highly interdependent and global. Therefore, any bold solution to any issue must be global.

Incredibly Insightful Book by Adam Tooze
