Faith sustained the Toney, Brown, and Williams families from well before the Revolutionary War to the civil rights area of the 1960s. They made their homes alongside the Roanoke River in the secluded community of Thelma, North Carolina. Prior to the close of the Civil War, they quietly opened their doors to receive manumitted slaves from neighboring states.
