Über diesen Titel

Running away from your problems doesn’t solve anything - but sometimes it’s more fun than dealing with them.

Elise was spending a lot of time crying on buses. She had just graduated from university; had a shiny new flat, her first proper job and a budding relationship - and they were making her miserable. Sitting at work one day, she hit upon the obvious solution. Run 5,000 miles around the coast of Britain, carrying her kit on her back. Six months later Elise set off, with absolutely no ultra-running experience, unable to read a map and having never pitched a tent before. Over the 301 days that followed, she developed a debilitating fear of farmyard animals, cried on a lot of beaches and saw Britain at its most wild and wonderful. With heart and humour, Elise explores the thrill of taking risks and putting your trust in total strangers, and learns some home truths along the way.

I'm a keen consumer of adventure memoirs and running is a favourite, so I was tempted by this book and expected it to be a worthwhile investment of time. That it was not.
It was like being stuck in a car on a long journey with a very annoying teenager. I hope that she continues to enjoy running, but calling herself an ultrarunner (multiple times) in regards to this journey seems delusional. I don't think she understands the definition of 'ultrarunner'.
As for memoir - well it's a memoir of something, but not so much running or the coast. It's more banging on about where she stayed overnight and how woefully ignorant and unprepared she was. Lucky she had daddy (and others) to bail her out. This is not what I'd call an adventure or a running memoir. She admits that she hates camping, which is an indicator of her attitude toward adventure. I suspect that some people undertake such challenges, only because they envy the likes of Anna McDuff and see it as a sure-fire way to get the clicks. I prefer to read and/or listen to memoirs by those whose passion really is the adventure, not by someone who throws a tantrum about it before they've even started.

A tedious disappointment.
