Über diesen Titel

Clam jam. Definition: the female equivalent of a cock block. Example: You're chatting with a guy you're interested in, and your friend comes along and lays claim to him.

Maggie: That's my life - except it's worse. My friend who keeps "jamming" me is my gay roommate.

Fact: He went home with three - yes, three - of the guys I had been so sure were into me.

Fact: He's really pissing me off. I'll never manage to get a boyfriend before the age of 50 if he keeps this up.

Fact: Secretly, I wonder what it would be like if he weren't gay. Why do all the hot, sweet, tender-hearted guys have to be gay?

Ry: The day I interviewed for the room to rent, everything changed. I knew I had met the girl, except there was one small problem: She'd been burned badly and didn't want to deal with a heterosexual guy as a roommate. I could've found another place to live, but I wanted to live there - with her. So I had to go undercover.

Fact: I'm in love with my roommate.

Fact: She's going to hate me if I come clean now.

Fact: I'm not giving up. Which means I'll just have to continue to run defense until I figure out a way to get Maggie to see the real me.

Contains mature themes.

The story itself would be told quickly an I have to admit, after four hours I started wondering how long the same topic would get told over and over again within the upcoming four hours... it gets a little boring and unrealistic.

The two voices for Meggie and Ry are great though, so that makes listening fun in the long run.

It gets a bit long

I devour my fair share of romance novels, and have NEVER come across one that was so absolutely awful. I don't give up on books but I cranked the speed up to 1.7 just to make it through as fast as possible.

Contains spoilers.

From the get-go, the male main character Ry is a walking red flag, lying through his teeth and dragging his best friend into the mix. And the red flag moments just keep on piling up. He's dishonest, stalker-y, and a whiny bitch when things don't go his way. When confronted about the lies, he says how he's been trying to tell her but she kept cutting him off. Dear boy, if you really wanted to tell her, you would have done so. He pretends to be gay but gets irked when guys actually make a move on him.

The female main character Maggie gets completely absorbed by Ry once he moves in, and never seems smart enough to connect the dots as to why things happen the way they do. Not once does she really start to wonder why all the guys she chats with end up running AFTER her room mate shows up. She blames it on him being charismatic, and "famous" in his work. But why does he even come and introduce himself every time she talks to someone? She snaps at him for being a creep because he keeps watching her from his office with binoculars, and then she feels bad because he hangs up??
The amount of times I wanted that girl to run as far away as possible, wanted to slap some sense into her...

Both their best friends are practially as bad as Ry. His friend plays along, even supports the clam jamming, while her friend finds out about the lying and eventually says "I thought I'd let it play out" only to then help that lunatic get the girl back after the truth finally comes out. It is all excused because he loves her so much. The fact that he lied to move into that apartment because he'd been into her BEFORE that, the fact that he got in between her and every guy she met for a year, all that is simply ignored.

What's almost as bad as all the afore mentioned, is the way homosexuality and masculinity is handled. The male friend can't give Ry romantic advice without being asked if he's the one that's gay? The thought of touching your friends abs (the context works) is "disgusting"? Lines like "Yes, Jack has fucking throw pillows" almost made me pull out my hair, because I didn't know men couldn't have those on their couches. Even in the first chapters, it's all about "if only he wasn't gay" and not something a little more sensible like "if only he was into women".

This book is bad, and I can't believe how people actually enjoy it and don't see Ry for the awful, disgusting person he is.

Horrifying, really
