Über diesen Titel

Bloomsbury presents Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron, read by Bahni Turpin.

"Wholly original and captivating." – Brigid Kemmerer, New York Times bestselling author of A Curse So Dark and Lonely

Girls team up to overthrow the kingdom in this unique and powerful retelling of Cinderella from a stunning new voice that’s perfect for fans of Dhonielle Clayton and Melissa Albert.

It’s 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.

Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella’s mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all—and in the process, they learn that there’s more to Cinderella’s story than they ever knew . . .

This fresh take on a classic story will make listeners question the tales they’ve been told, and root for girls to break down the constructs of the world around them.

Let’s start with the easy things. I loved the narrator, Bahni Turpin. She did an amazing job giving each character a unique voice and she had an enchanting way of telling the story. I very much enjoyed listening to her voice.
I also loved the very important topics the book dealt with. Without ever getting boring, the author did an excellent job of bringing oppression and its effects, equality, and queerness into the story. She never wrote an explanation of these terms; understanding came with the story.
I really loved her writing style and the idea of the story, which I found very original and exciting. I also liked the way she portrayed her characters; very strong and interesting women, the dichotomy of the protagonist's parents and the villain's position of power. It must have taken a lot of research to make the reader understand how such a monster holds a position of power and why no one does anything about it.
I also loved the fact, that the main character was a lesbian and it wasn’t made a big deal. She liked girls and that was it. The author did a beautiful job with that. And of course I loved the love story.
The books themes are so, so important. These kind of books are important. Understanding the patriarchy and queer representation are important. That’s why I’m having such a hard time rating / reviewing the book. Because it is so essential and important, I’m not sure the things I didn’t like matter. Maybe they do though.

And here are the things I didn’t like:
Things that were so obvious to the reader, the characters didn't understand until so much later. I found that really annoying.
(Spoiler: The king feeds on the lives of others. As he feeds, his victims age until they die). This was the big reveal that almost the entire book was building up to. It was a very disappointing resolution, especially because it was clear to the reader after the first third of the book.
The beginning (first quarter) was kind of predictable, too. For example, when Luke showed up at the ball, it was obvious to me that he was going to claim Sophia. The book also had great twists, but very often I thought: „Seriously? Come on! That is so obvious. The characters should have figured that already out.“ At some points I got so frustrated with the author and the story, that I almost didn’t continue listening to the book.

In conclusion, the story is beautiful and extreme important, but it also needs a lot of work still. For some reason I also didn’t really form a bond to the two main characters like I usually would.

The most challenging review I’ve ever written

Is this the most exceptional work of romantasy I ever read? Probably not. Not all of its twists surprised me (though some definitely did) and it isn’t free of modern clichés either. But it brilliantly transfers all those everyday markers of misogyny that we often fail to recognise in an almost palpable way into a modern fairy tale just to destroy them like a force of nature that we maybe can not achieve in this completion in reality - but we can certainly be inspired by it.

Overthrowing patriarchy won’t happen overnight - but it’s beautiful to dream of it.

It wasn't bad, but felt like a fanfiction story? I had the feeling that the author often couldn't make up her mind.. At some moments the story felt like "the handmaids tale" but simplified and wrapped in a magical children's story, but then it's also a queer teenage romance with adventure. Some moments didn't really make sense and the characters often make unnecessarily poor decisions? But I still liked it, it was easy and fun. I especially laughed when the gay guy implied several times that he is gay, but Sophia just couldn't get it.
