A New York Times Best Seller

A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2020

Named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR

“A fascinating scientific, cultural, spiritual and evolutionary history of the way humans breathe - and how we’ve all been doing it wrong for a long, long time.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Big Magic and Eat Pray Love)

No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly.

There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing: Take air in, let it out, repeat 25,000 times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya, and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test long-held beliefs about how we breathe.

Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. None of this should be possible, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again.

    Atemberaubend

    Wiederspruchliche Pseudowissenschaft

according to the book by breathing in some weird manner you will cure any disease. You have to breathe through the nose, but not too fast, not too slow, not even normal. you could breath from one nostril depending on what your needs are. You could breathe enough, but even too much. Breathing will improve your sleep, sex life, cure your cancer and your rheumatoid arthritis. A perfect representation of the power of pseudoscience and some how single individuals by reporting they're experience of miraculous improvements try to sell something: courses, books, interviews etc. Exactly how the author got to this book. In summary: Quakery

A life saver and game changer

In 15 years of dealing with depression I have found nothing more helpful and practical than the methods described here.
    On top of that:
Great overview, well written, fine journalistic approach.
I very much enjoyed the author being a seeker and sceptic both.
The book that made 2020 endurable and manageable.

    Breathing is totally underrated

I read this after I saw Joe Rogan post it on his podcast and I always knew I am not a good breather. After this book I finally manage to put together how the breathing techniques can influence our bodies and minds and more over that there are many different types of techniques that can each be used to induce a certain state.

    Great book!

Unfocused dancing between science and esoterics

That this book ends with a warning label, so they won't be liable says a lot. With the subject matter being so interesting and underresearched it felt really bad that the author elevated some new age gurus and quacks to the same level as revolutionary research and ancient wisdoms. It is a rather scattered overview into everything connected to breathing and I really feel there could have been a way better book, or books if he focused on one subject matter and dug deep than just glance over it.

    Amazing old knowledge revisited

I feel like this is a must for schools! Or for anyone, actually :) There is so much knowledge about the most fundamental aspect of our lives - the breath! And how many of our inner systems and how much of our well-being is interconnected with this source of energy! It is a fun and exciting read! Enjoyed every minute and would highly recommend it (and am doing so).

    Just as undervalued as breathing

This book literally feels like a breath of fresh air... giving not only practical ways to improve breathing at the end of the book, but also stating the theory and origin behind every implication. Still there is so much more to learn about breathing..and this book has given me the perfect introduction. Strongly recommend!
