Über diesen Titel

For all the thousands of books that have been written about religion, few until this one have attempted to examine it scientifically: to ask why - and how - it has shaped so many lives so strongly. Is religion a product of blind evolutionary instinct or rational choice? Is it truly the best way to live a moral life?

Ranging through biology, history, and psychology, Daniel C. Dennett charts religion’s evolution from “wild” folk belief to “domesticated” dogma. Not an antireligious creed but an unblinking look beneath the veil of orthodoxy, Breaking the Spell will be read and debated by believers and skeptics alike.

If the arguments in favor and against religion were like both most distant points from equilibrium of the pendulum, Daniel Dennett's deserves the extreme position on the side of 'against religion'. As such it is an interesting book to understand the maximum position and its arguments. I personally did not feel too much sympathy for the phrases of the book and often felt the urge to return to more stable middle regions. For all his writing and sometimes convincing arguments about the limits of individual freedom, Daniel Dennett did not offer me any new insight in the debate and just reitterates many well known memes by Richard Dawkins and others. As a summary: if a book contains too often the sentence "as I already highlighted in a previous book", it is time for the author to stop writing and go into retirement. The reader can better go for the older books and understand them in their historical perspective.
