Über diesen Titel

Nebula Award Finalist: A genetic engineering breakthrough may portend the destruction of humanity in this cyberpunk novel by the author of The Forge of God.

This Hugo and Nebula Award finalist follows present-day events in which the fears concerning the nuclear annihilation of the world subsided after the Cold War and the fear of chemical warfare spilled over into the empty void it left behind.

An amazing breakthrough in genetic engineering made by Vergil Ulam is considered too dangerous for further research, but rather than destroy his work, he injects himself with his creation and walks out of his lab, unaware of just how his actions will change the world.

Author Greg Bear’s treatment of the traditional tale of scientific hubris is both suspenseful and a compelling portrait of a new intelligence emerging amongst us, irrevocably changing our world.

Such and interesting and captivating story is typical by Greg Bear, the way it was delivered however is unusual as he usually writes in a boring style, despite the good idea behind it. This book managed to surprise me however as it combines both a very cool premise and an engaging writing style. A sci-fi about genetic experiments gone wrong, or right in a very twisted way. The story almost touches the horror genre, reminding me of Annihilation at some points, which I found a very nice touch.
The recording on the other hand is straight up the worst I've heard so far on this website. The sound quality and volume varies throughout the book and there are artifacts. Sometimes it feels like it was recorded in a small bathroom. The narrator is good but the quality does him ni favors unfortunately.

Good story, decent narrator, bad sound quality

Science Fiction should be based on real Science, give something to learn or to think about, and intuitively convey the border to fiction.

This book has no clear boundaries between Science and Fiction, which I hate. In the opening, where Biological „Facts“ are given as an introduction, many things are wrong, e.g. what „introns“ are. Also the fiction is lackluster, i.e. makes no sense or is self-contradicting, like first explaining the phenomenon is based on DNA accessibility, not sequence, but then saying it gets transmitted by the DNA sequence, that is anyways identical between cells.

Then come completely empty explanations like „I made DNA make two RNAs, one being translated into protein and the other…“, not saying anything about how this was achieved. What I hated the most was whenever the scientist protagonist „explained“ the phenomenon, and just vomits some feverish „big words“ until interrupted by the lesser intellectuals complaining that this is beyond their understanding.

Last criticism is that the book seems like one interesting idea extended to book-length with filler material. There was nothing interesting beyond the main idea.

Yes, the book is 40 years old and one has to acknowledge that Molecular Biology barely existed, compared to what we know today. Also, the book and the author surely had positive impact on subsequent SciFi literature.

Still, I think the book didn’t age well and cannot compete with modern SciFi.

science fiction or wrong science?
