Birnam Wood is on the move...

Five years ago, Mira Bunting founded a guerrilla gardening group: Birnam Wood. An undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic gathering of friends, this activist collective plants crops wherever no one will notice, on the sides of roads, in forgotten parks, and neglected backyards. For years, the group has struggled to break even. Gripping story well performed

Having loved „The Luminaries“ by this author when it came out, I was so excited to dig into her latest offering. And it’s very different, very good but hard to describe: a psychological thriller meets environmental do-gooder meets character study. A New Zealand guerilla gardening group gets involved with an American billionaire seemingly prepping a bunker who’s involved with a kiwi regular guy who’s being knighted for his efforts for conservation. It’s all quite intriguing and a well told and rather chilling story involving multiple points of view: The infighting within the leftist dogooder group, the psychotic billionaire, the opportunistic Lord & Lady Darvish. Despite all the stereotypes there are moments of real depth and insights: between friends, couples, lovers. The seconds half is also thrilling and unpredictable- I needed to pause several times because it was genuinely scary (I’m a wimp!).
The audio is fantastic- the narrator has a pleasant kiwi accent but so believably covers the full range of characters!
