Über diesen Titel
Hannah has a routine. Wake up, take a shower, go to school, go to work, come home, and pass out.
It's a perfectly normal routine for a perfectly normal girl who does not have to remember how her limbs work every morning because of haunting nightmares of being a very different creature in a very different world. That's all she thinks they are—nightmares—until one night, they're all too lucid, and her body on Earth starts to change. Slowly, Hannah's humanity starts to slip away... but surely she can continue just sticking to the routine, right? It'll be fine. It has to be.
A mix of urban and traditional fantasy, Bioshifter is a story in two worlds, with magic leaking in from one to the other. It's a story about love, self-acceptance, neurodivergence, and a whole lot of trauma. Strap in and enjoy!
©2023 Natalie Maher (P)2023 Podium AudioHannah is a very relatable main character. And I don't get the ugly ratings who say "she's annoying", "she's too gay" "leave interesting relationships out of fantasy books". I'm so here for a neurodivergent, interesting character. She's just 17 years old and you can't tell me you didn't look at boobs a lot at that age. Hannah is reliable, she loves her routine and cleaning. Yes, she has issues with her feelings regarding herself or her relationship with her mom. But all these little bits, they give that characters so many facettes.
Hannah's friends really grew on me the longer the story goes on. The author really put so much work into making them special.
Usually you get about 11 hours of audiobook. With this on you get double for the same price. More entertainment! (Someone should sell audiobook to the goddess).
I'm all about world building and would have been bothered if the magic system did not make sense. But it does! And I really appreciate that there are no stats and levels like in other isekai.
So yeah if you are a part of the queer community and maybe a nerd who loved Pokémon and anime, this book is for you. It's not cozy and it cracked my heart more than once and organs are described rather colorful, but I would not want it any other way. I like my fantasy storys big.
So maybe check your trigger warning and then fasten your seatbelt and visit the World Tree!
Great queer fantasy work!

Unfortunately, the narrator in this case is grating and really hard to listen to. Her narrating is mostly monotone, hard to follow when any important transitions happen, and I find myself tuning her out subconsciously while listening to the book because of how both boring and unpleasant her narration is.
Buy the book, avoid the audiobook.
Good story, bad narrator

Full disclosure, I think I'm somewhat in the age range of the author's target audience, so to no surprise, I can very much get behind the initial setting of the main character. Young, Covid is about, the "future for the rest of your live" is right around the corner, nothing that needs to be done right now is done right now and more. It's kind of like the MC used Twitter too much before the book starts to be sensitive to the woes of the world. The world itself feels hostile from the POV of the main character.
Throw this character into a situation no sane person would be able to handle and you got Bioshifter.
I will say, that Bioshifter is not for everyone. Especially those who have long since given up on keeping track of what's been going on in the world, but I can not stress enough how much of a ride you're in for with this one. Its written in a very human way that catches the emotions really well. The voice acting fits really well since no only the differentiation between characters is clear, but also the emotions, directions and dynamics are very well voiced.
If it wasn't for too many people being too far gone, I'd say that this is a book for a lot of people. That being said, this is very much a bit too graphic and a bit too... lets say, close to real life for some that I can only recommend it to those who have the mental capacity to stomach an epic tale that may or may not have a happy ending. Personally, I had to stop reading the final chapters and am only now going to catch up again after I finish my re-listening of the first two books. Which is to say, I enjoy it, but its heavy. It hits much closer to home than expected.
And in case Thundamoo reads this one: I very much look forward to what my favourite author is cooking up next. Tho I will wait for a while since your books are the number 1 reason I don't get much sleep when a new one comes out. 24h in a day is just too short.
Probably one of the best I will ever own.

Natalie Maher knows as ever how to make those of us feel seen, who rarely get to have that. Characters are ADHDers, autistic people, trans people, narcissists, and pluralities, among other things. To those of us on these spectra, the characters who are supposed to be likable are, those who aren't aren't. I've praised Natalie's character work elsewhere, and it remains one of her strong points here. The only note of criticism in that regard is her tendency to turn her main characters into unstable killing machines, which is unfortunately a trend that persists here.
In terms of worldbuilding, I'm not sure I'd call this unique, but it's certainly not the kind of thing you see every day. I think I'd like it a lot more, if it wasn't so depressing.
The plot is fine. I haven't analyzed it as a piece of craftsmanship, but other than the end, as in the last few hours of the last book, I never had the impression that it drags too much, is too predictable, or too cliche.
My biggest criticism in regards to the series is mainly that the main cast occasionally clutches the old idiot ball a bit too hard. This was particularly ergregious in the Crafted city. When trying to find out what caused the apocalypse, and how to prevent another, it didn't once, in multiple days, occur to any of the characters to just ask the most well informed people in the world by far? That was an immensely frustrating part of the story, and while it didn't ruin the whole thing for me, it came close.
Would I recommend this overall? It depends. I wish I hadn't listened to it. Being hit in the trauma over, and over will do that. If you can stomach the things I warned about though? It's probably worth it.
Spoiler review for the whole series: Good, but incredibly depressing
