A dog groomer’s walk turned into a discovery that exposed a months-long swap: a 1941 Charles Budd oil appraised between $110,000 and $140,000 was found rolled in a drainage gully while a student copy worth $4,000 hung in the museum’s frame. Who replaced the original with a replica, and why did institutional paperwork let a six-figure painting leave the collection?
In this episode, you’ll hear how the painting was found, what museum records and a single $300 appraisal reveal, and how the Ohio Art Crime Unit began piecing the case together; will the records, the buyer registration, and the deaccession process answer who is responsible?
Person: Patricia Ames
Date: February 2019
Location: Douglas Doyle Trail outside Morrow Falls, Ohio
Artist: Charles Budd
Object: February Thaw, Muskingum - oil on linen, 24 by 30 inches
- The canvas was found rolled inside a black archival sleeve in three inches of snowmelt.
- The painting was catalogued as lot OH-1988-114 after acquisition in 1988 from a Dunmore estate.
- The original Budd was appraised between $110,000 and $140,000; the student copy was valued at $4,000.
- The Overton Museum’s deaccession file contained a single $9,800 appraisal produced by Cornerstone Art Advisory for a $300 fee.
- The Overton board approved the deaccession in June 2018 and the auction occurred in September 2018 with the buyer registering as Raymond Ogle.
