The Ring on the Locked Shed That Sent a Man to Prison

A small gold signet ring with the initials M.V. sat on the iron hasp of a padlocked maintenance shed at Caldwell Reservoir on the morning of December 9, 2011 - clean, upright, and four hundred yards from the nearest road. That ring would help convict a man who later spent twenty-six months in prison, then become the key to freeing him; how could a single object reorder an entire investigation?

In this episode, we tell the sequence of events from Melissa Vogel's disappearance on December 7, 2011 through the discovery of the ring and the testimony that followed, and we ask how withheld details about the ring and shed reshaped the case.

Person: Melissa Vogel
Date: December 7-19, 2011
Location: Caldwell Reservoir (ring found), body recovered in south end of Harwick
Person: Steven Vogel
Person: Ronald Draper

- Melissa Vogel disappeared after leaving her Parrish Hill Road apartment on December 7, 2011 at 7:00 PM and was reported missing when she failed to text her roommate.
- Melissa’s body was recovered on December 19, 2011 from a drainage channel in south Harwick and the medical examiner ruled strangulation with time of death between 10:00 PM Dec 7 and 2:00 AM Dec 8.
- A jogger, Nancy Allen, found a gold signet ring with initials M.V. on the iron hasp of a locked maintenance shed at Caldwell Reservoir at 6:40 AM on December 9, 2011; the shed had been padlocked since November 1 and the lock was undamaged.
- Officer Pete Solis photographed and bagged the ring at 7:40 AM on December 9, 2011 and recorded it as clean - not frost-covered, not muddy, not weathered.
- Ronald Draper, already in custody on a receiving stolen property charge, told police in February 2012 that he had heard Steven Vogel mention a shed near the reservoir and used the word "marker," matching an internal case note that had not been released to the public.
